Boston schools apparently got hit bad.

I was really relieved to see this. If UVA dropped to 8 I was going to withdraw.
Same here.

But in all seriousness, it seems that the new employment aspect of the USNews Rankings includes school funded positions (otherwise UVA probably would not be 7)...OR it does take out school funded positions and UVA would've otherwise been higher. Food for thought.

I think I read that school-funded positions were still included. I'm curious as to what these positions are. I saw in one of the other threads that Yale has a high number of school funded positions, so I think it's safe to say that they aren't all bad, but they obviously aren't all good either.

Research positions that don't pay enough to cover loans can be bad ($12-15/hr)...better than being unemployed though.

Sure it's better than being unemployed, but I can get a job that pays that much now. Does a research position generally lead to legal employment? Or does it just delay impending doom? Because if it's not at least leading to a job as a lawyer, I'd rather count it as not finding a job, since it is the kind of outcome that would make me wish I hadn't gone to law school.

Anyone, who can gain admission to uva law, can find a job that pays $12/hour without going $250,000.00 into debt.

I read some where (this board, maybe?) that for the C/O 2012 Big Law hiring was up and the school funded rate was only ~10%. If this is true, assuming all other employment stats remained relatively stable, this would be a very good sign. I guess we will see when the C/O 2012 data is released by the end of March.

I definitely want to sit in on the mock Contracts class (mostly since I've read/discussed the other two cases in my undergrad coursework and I've heard good things about Geis in the UVA Law Students thread). Otherwise, definitely hitting up the business and health law info sessions and maybe the financial aid one (though they're probably only talking about loans). I'm missing out on Thursday's events since I get in late =[

I'll also be missing the Thursday stuff. Long drive from FL. I'm definitely going to hit up the Business Law and SCOTUS Litigation clinic (what a cool program) info sessions, and then either the Financial Aid or the Con law one, depending on whether I'm feeling masochistic or idealistic. I wish we could go to all three of the careers sessions. And Shadow is right -- Geis is supposed to be a fantastic lecturer -- so I'm going to his mock class too. After that, the Biltmore.

Is the Financial Aid session optional this year? Last year they had everybody in the auditorium and did the Financial Aid presentation, career services talk, and I think something else all in a row. That was in the afternoon too so people were starting to get pretty antsy.

The programs that stood out to me and that I would recommend for those attending this year, for whatever it's worth, were the SCOTUS clinic (remember thinking that program sounded awesome and the supervisor was a cool guy), the student panel, and the mock class on Lawrence v. Texas, if they haven't changed the cases (forget which professor taught it, but she was cool and it's an interesting case for a mock class).

Oh, and the I remember thinking that the lunch was actually pretty decent.

UVA Admitted Students Schedule (LinkRemoved) wrote:Mock Classes
Constitutional Law/Criminal Law, Anne Coughlin, Discussing Lawrence v. Texas
Constitutional Law/Election Law, Dan Ortiz, Discussing Citizens United
Corporate/Business Law, George Geis, Discussing Ira S. Bushey & Sons, Inc., v. U.S.
Those are the one's being offered. The financial aid is optional this year (in fact almost everything except the law students forum and the alum receptions are based on choices).

Yeah, same 3 cases as last year I believe. I had heard Geis was a great professor, but that case wound up being pretty strange so I attended Coughlin's class.

And good to see that they changed it up. Even though the financial aid session is obviously an important one, it was difficult to pay attention to in the middle of a 3 hour auditorium session.

I think everything is under an hour now. Forward thinking on their part!

I found the finaid talk to be condescending and repetitive. Unless you're really confused about the process and don't want to look it up on one of the thousands of websites that explain it clearly, I'd skip it.

Last call for anyone interested in the meetup for Friday night. So far we have 10 admitted students and 1 current student coming. Message me here and I'll give you the details.

Oh, and just an FYI this event doesn't have to be an only guys thing - ladies you are more than welcome as well.

I'm probably going to end up going to ask about how they handle deferment requests and paperwork. I have to get my student loans and my parents' loans deferred ASAP when school starts.
