Does anyone have any info on how law students at Penn can take classes at Wharton for the certificate? I know there's some sort of a lottery...

Congrats to everyone who's gotten in! Can't believe it's already that time again.

I'm also a current 1L so feel free to ask me or PM me questions about Penn, housing, or anything really! Penn's really an awesome school and I'm really glad I chose to come here. Hopefully I'll see a lot of you guys here next year!

Lottery is only for 3Ls. As 2Ls, we can sign up for the classes after the lottery for any open courses. You can take Wharton classes without going for the certificate as well, because you can take 4 outside of law school anyway. For the cert, you must take 1 BPUB class and 2 electives at Wharton, they can be BPUB or Wharton classes but cannot be MBA core classes.

So basically you wait until 2L fall and take Wharton classes. If you want the cert, file a formal application for the cert (just a formality) and take the right classes.

For ASW, do you think a car is necessary? I'm staying at a hotel in Rittenhouse Square.
Probably not. Rittenhouse should be about a 20 minute walk to the law school. Philly's a pretty walkable city and there's also the bus.

Question for those already at school: I already live in Philly, so this Saturday I'm going to look at some apartments in University City. One's at 41st and Chestnut, another is at 42nd and Pine, and the other is at 40th and Locust. Obviously they're all pretty close together, but if you had to choose, what location do you think is best for a law school student? The rents are all pretty similar, although the one at 41st and Chestnut does seem to be a nicer place. Also, how would you judge those locations against living in Center City? Thanks for all your responses in this thread, it's really helpful to hear opinions from current students.

I'm definitely up for it. Let us know a date/time justicefishy.

I'm not flying in until Friday morning--didn't know we had optional socials on Thursday... I was pretty bummed. So I'd be down for Saturday night if that's when it ends up happening.

Sorry to be annoying, going to ask this in the UMich thread also.

Is anyone planning on going to Penn ASW then Michigan ASW? If so, how are you doing it? For some reason, even though they are bordering states, the airfare is insane. Not sure if it's worth it to drive, or just take Amtrak. Any thoughts?

I suggest not to drive. I planned to go to Mich's ASW last year by driving, and it snowed right before the date, so I ended up not going.

Also, they are not bordering and it's quite far apart. I would have taken me about a whole day of driving, and it's not fun in the winter time to drive through PA's mountains.

Isn't noon a little early? I plan on going to some of the panels on Saturday afternoon so maybe it could be more of a dinner then drinks thing on Saturday night? And no, Smumps, drinks are not on me :)

Sat after the last panel is a good time unless everyone wants to get out of town. I got together with a few people last year after that, it was cool but not everyone planned to stay that long.

The first night social and the the diversity reception were both fun, make sure you guys plan to attend.
