I've seen those links, but the last 2 are actually for housing in Evanston, not in Chicago ( see - http://www.northwestern.edu/gradhousing ... ation.html ) I was actually referring to this housing:

http://www.law.northwestern.edu/current ... ions02.pdf
Abbott Hall
Some University family housing, in studio and one-bedroom apartments, is still available on the Chicago campus in Abbott Hall, located at 710 North Lake Shore Drive, which is directly across the street from the Law School. Priority assignment to these apartments is offered to students who will be living with their spouses or partners and those living with dependent children. Persons applying for family housing are required to submit documentation supporting their family status. Please call the Graduate Housing Office at (847) 491-5127 for more information about this process. Web: http://www.northwestern.edu/gradhousing/. Rates effective 9/1/2009

Abbott Hall Monthly Rate
Small Studio $860
Medium Studio $920
Large Studio $975
Extra Large Studio $1,050
Small One Bedroom $1,135
Medium One Bedroom $1,225
Large One Bedroom $1,245

Worcester House
Many current students have also lived in Worcester House, an apartment building owned and managed by Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Located within a few blocks of the Law School at 244 East Pearson St., Worcester House is comprised of furnished studios (3 different sizes), 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments. The pricing information is rent per month and is included below. Contact Info: Merrily Smith, Property Coordinator; Phone: 312-926-2334; Fax: 312-926-3218.

Unit Size Price Range
Small Studio $726-854
Medium Studio $855-886
Large Studio $1005-1018
1-Bedroom $1158-1249
2-Bedroom $1907-2667

There is some stuff about NU grad student housing at: http://www.law.northwestern.edu/current ... ngfaq.html and: http://www.northwestern.edu/gradhousing/ but it doesn't sound like there is much available for law students.

My SO and I have been looking at a bunch of potential places in the Streeterville area and it seems like there are 1 bedroom places in the 1200-1700 range that are pretty good. I think we're going to shoot for a cap of $1,500 (equal to what we're paying now in Santa Monica)

The McManus page (NU Grad housing in Streeterville) has some rate comparisons:

http://www.northwestern.edu/gradhousing ... rates.html
McManus is in Evanston with the B-school.

There's the one building across the street from the LS that is grad student family housing (single person unlikely to get in there), and all the rest of the grad student housing is up on the Evanston campus (way too far away).
Abbot Hall: http://www.law.northwestern.edu/current ... using.html

Worcester House is an apartment building owned by the hospital that has significantly lower rents, but I haven't found anyone with opnions or info on it, and it doesn't seem to have a website. Might be worth checking out after ASW.
Ah yes, that's what I was asking about! (you scooped my clarification post XD) I was hoping I'd have a shot at Abbott, but...I guess not ): Maybe I will call in and ask some questions about Worcester and then go and check them out after ASW if they're a viable option!

Awesome, let me know what you find out about Worcester.
Are you extending your ASW stay at all to apartment hunt? I'll be in Chicago until Tuesday afternoon. (My dad may fly out to join the hunt, but he hasn't decided yet.)

Hmmm I may be the only person who does not end up in Streeterville/Gold Coast. I need some vintage charm in my apartment...

Will do!

I'm actually going to be in Chicago from probably the 6th or 7th until the end of ASW. I haven't booked tickets yet so I'm pretty flexible, and I'm quitting my job the week before, so I'll be able to stay as long as I want to. I'm actually thinking of getting one of those extended stay monthly apartment/hotel things and living there for a month just to get the hang of things and visit a bunch of apt complexes. IDK how much that would cost though.

Should I book a hotel room for ASW? I didn't read anything about NU paying for a room except for on the actual day (which I can't figure out if that means the 13th or 14th)... anyone have any insight into this?

I haven't heard about NU paying for hotel at ALL, where did you see that? They will attempt to place you with a student if you want to couchsurf.

Otherwise, yes, book a hotel. There's a hostel somewhere about if you want to go the cheap route.

NU doesn't pay for housing, ONLY for AIRFARE (aka not trains/buses/gas) that costs over $200, and they will only reimburse up to $150. The flight must also be from over 300 miles away.

Is there a form to submit for that yet anywhere? My $410 flight from Portland certainly qualifies. (It's $400 to fly from Portland to ANYWHERE. So irritating.)

Ahh, I must have been thinking about the couch-surfing option...

Also interested in this reimbursement form. I'm definitely $200+/300+miles away.

From the NU thread OP:
Must submit a proposed itinerary with application for subsidy, and submit reimbursement receipts after the event. You will be notified of your subsidy amount within 2 weeks, after which you will receive more paperwork to fill out in order to get your reimbursement. This can take 6-8 weeks and is dependent on how promptly you return the reimbursement paperwork.

I'm definitely not sold on Streeterville. I also like historic apartments and the prospect of getting more space for less money.

FWIW, I've run across buildings built in the 20s (larger and small) in Streeterville/Gold Coast during my online apartment hunting.

I personally think old buildings frequently smell funny and have weird bathrooms, but I do like how they look. :)

Yeah, unfortunately many old buildings are improperly maintained, so it can be hard to find a good fit.
