actually TLS is pretty workout-friendly. there's a pretty long history here of really sound diet and workout advice for those who need it.

Motivation is a huge problem. On study breaks I avoid all productive activities.

Don't eat late night meals. If you get hungry, eat some fruit instead.
Walk/bike places. I like biking... it's self-powered and often faster than taking the bus.
Jog for 20 minutes in the morning to get your metabolism going. Once you get back into being a habitual exerciser, you'll be fine.

I think you should pack your lunch. It only takes 5 minutes to throw a ham sandwhich together, pack a bag of chips, grab a bottled water and a rice krispy treat.

Then go home and make ramen noodles or macaroni and cheese.

Stop eating out --> Stop growing ass big

Or, if you smokes cigarettes you will be cool, make more friend and they help you with law homework.

+1! Pack your lunch. This helps me from getting fat.

Get a lean cuisine, fruit, low-fat cheese, granola bar or something. You'll be perfectly stuffed and without eating 5,000 calories.

Pack your lunch, cook your own dinner, stay away from pasta most nights of the week.

Oh, and if you're like everyone else, you're probably spending more time in the library than you need to.

Ive actually lost 10 pounds in law school, but much of that was due to losing a gf of 5 years, which killed my appetite at first but now i just work out for an hour everyday. Stay away from alot of the extras in coffee, eat more protein (grilled chicken, fish, turkey, etc) and less carbs.

I've lost 20 pounds since school started in August. I moved from a driving city to a school with lots of other athletic-types and green space abound, and I now walk to school, gym, grocery store, etc.

Seriously, if you don't think you have time to exercise and live a reasonably healthy lifestyle NOW, when you're in law school...good luck finding the time once you're a practicing attorney, blubberbutt.

I'll preface my advice by saying that I am a 0L...

There is an awesome workout called Crossfit that has been picking up some popularity. I plan on utilizing it next year due to the short (albeit incredibly intense) duration of the workouts. You can check out the program on Crossfit.com, and for runners/cyclists, etc. you can check out Crossfitendurance.com

No, I don't have any financial stake in the matter, but they have awesome workouts that are relatively short and incredibly effective.

There are also crossfit gyms across the nation, but I don't have $150 a month to spend...some of you may.

I'm a 1L and have lost weight since I got here by only eating food at home during the week [no ordering in], and some intermittent hula hooping breaks :)

There isn't going to be a ton of time to work out, I admit I'm a stone's throw from the campus gym and I still can't find the time most of the time... but you have to prioritize your health or you'll probably get sick [and fat].

Mix relaxation and working out. I pick one one thing on TV I want to watch a day, then watch it while running/biking/ellipticaling at the gym. Lift weights 15 minutes before and after cardio, eat well and you're golden.

i call shenanigans on anyone who says they dont have time to work out. im a 1l, i study a lot (at least i think i do), and i still find time to work out and go out with friends. you can probably find 5 - 6 hours a week to do some lifting. if you really believe that you dont have that kind of time then run 20 - 30 minutes a day or do some crossfit. youd be surprised how great of a workout you can get in 20 minutes.

also eat right. want to lose weight? take 30 minutes a week to go grocery shopping and buy food that is easy to prepare. dont eat pizza, chinese, or junk food. eat lots of greens, as few simple carbs as possible, increase your protein consumption, and stop eating processed crap.

Honestly, I would start by developing a study/class schedule for your week. You might be amazed at how much "free time" you can find by eliminating bullshit.

Here's how I try it:

7:00am - 7:40am: wake up, get ready, bowl of cereal, out the door
7:55am: get to class
8:00am - noon: Class/study
noonish: 30 min - hour lunch
1ish - 5:00pm: Class/study
5:00pm - 7:00pm: Go home, relax, make some foot, chill for a bit
7ish - 9ish: Reading

I stick to this schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
On Friday and Monday I don't study at night, but I stay at school until 5.
On Saturday I do my two hours of study in the morning so I can enjoy the rest of the day.
On Sunday night I do another 2 hour study session.

This works out to 45 hours/week at school (14 hours of class, 5 ~1hr long lunch breaks, 26 hours of reading/studying/bathroom breaks/and occasional "zone out" time)
Then I spend another 10 hours studying/reading at home on nights and weekends.

14 hours in class, ~36 hours of study per week (>5hrs study per day, on average).

With this I have more than enough time to watch my favorite shows and sports, I can always find time to throw something together to eat (which is not only healthier, but cheaper), and I still have time to exercise on Wednesday nights (9-11) and get out of the house to stretch my legs and spend quality time with my wife on the weekends.

If you don't have a wife and kids to please, this should free up even more of your time to balance school and play (and exercise).

So,
step 1: Set a schedule
step 2: Find "free time" to work out
step 3: make your meals at home as often as you can
step 4: $$$

Hooping = awesome! Have you been doing tricks and stuff?

Agree with everyone else's advice to cook and pack your own lunch. Cheaper; doesn't have to be that time consuming; can be a nice break. Plus 'knowing how to cook' is a good life skill that helps prevent you from being mistaken for a contemptible man-child (I'm assuming OP is male.)

You can do stuff that doesn't involve going to the gym per se -- if there are any athletic activities at your school, you should join them. Good way to meet people, too.

It only takes 40-60 minutes a day 4-6 days a week to see a huge change in your body. Educate yourself about how to maximize that time by eating right around that exercise. Everybody in law school knows how to read and research, or soon will. Use those skills to learn how to drop weight. You'll just feel better overall.

So if you don't have time to exercise a little bit, you're spending all that time studying? That's impressive if you have that high of a threshold for textbooks. But if not, take a little extra time and it helps mentally a ton. Of course, I'm pissed off a lot, so it helps me deal with the aggression if I can exercise.

I'd suggest peanut butter and jelly for lunch. It provides good energy if you can use it about one and a half to two hours after eating it. I've actually lost weight because I just can't eat as much as I did before school. I used to eat a ton after lifting to gain weight, but now those calories I lose are gone forever because I don't have the money to eat like that. Good and bad, but it gets old being a skinny white kid.

You have plenty of time to work out. Do your reading on the elliptical machine.

Seriously though, exercise is good for the brain/memory. Exercise 3x/wk. At the very minimum, you should be walking 20 minutes 3x/wk. Follow a weight lifting program (crossfit, 5x5 - stronglifts.com) and do some cardio to shed the fat.

As for a diet...
I'm surviving 1L classtime on proteinbars, almonds, and lattes between classes/in the library. Dinner is usually some kind of grilled animal with greens. Works for me. The key is to divide your calories into 6 small meals per day. It keeps the blood sugar more level and curb cravings, therefore it is easier to concentrate over a long period. I don't appreciate a blood sugar crash or carb crash getting in the way of my studies.

If you are telling me that you cannot set aside 60 minutes, 3 days a week to go to the gym, then either you are full of shit or are the least efficient reader/studier ever born.

Better CR.

I doubt most people really lose weight to live longer, more likely to live better. Therefore, I totally condone smoking cigarettes and drinking diet soda, who cares? You lookin' good. (insert sarcasm giveaway) Does you like to dance? Can you dance? Dancing is more fun than going to the gym any day, and you can go for hours if you're just that awesome. Do some strength training on the side too.
