Assuming you have taken Professional Responsibility (or Legal Ethics, or however it's called at your school), how long does it take, more or less, to study for the MPRE?

I just signed up for the November test, and am wondering whether this is a matter of a day or two of studying, or whether I'm looking forward to two weeks of work.

Also, has anyone done the free course on Kaplan's website? Any good?

I'm taking the MPRE in Nov. too. I've heard various reports on how long it took to prep: anywhere from "one day of focused study was too much" to "I worked on Barbri's materials for a week and still didn't feel good about it."

Now that I type that out though, it seems like both of these individuals could have spent about the same amount of time (8-10 hrs, maybe?). I don't know.

I also signed up for the free Kaplan course. I haven't done enough yet to know if it's any good. All I know is that it's free.

I'm putting it off until the spring myself. I've already taken Ethics, so I expect any prep that I do to be more of a refresher than anything else.

So, to those who did it today, how did it go?

I think in the end I felt somewhere in between those two individuals in PB's post. I spend a day and half or so, but I can't say I felt that I mastered the material, not at all.

I took it & felt good about approx. 35 questions, 50/50 on about 20, and not much better than random on about 5. Could be I did fine, and could be I bombed -- but I didn't feel completely unprepared. I did the one day Bar/Bri class, took two practice tests, and read through the fill-in outline twice. Plus, I had a semester of ethics previously, most of which was focused on the model rules, etc.

Some of the stuff they asked about on the MPRE seemed really random, and one of the questions seemed to require or assume knowledge of a body of substantive, non-ethics law.

Well, sounds like you passed, since you don't really need much more than 50% correct! (Passing is something like 25-30 out of 50.)

Though passing scores vary from state to state, in most cases a passing score is well under the average score. Sometimes I feel tests like this exist just to force you to actually look at the rules at least once, so you can't use the "I didn't know it was wrong to sleep with my client" excuse at a later date.

I haven't taken ethics yet, but I'm surprised that's wrong. I guess that MPRE studying will be worth something for me!

That's what I think too.

There were tons and tons of questions that I was 50/50 on. Only a couple I had no idea. But not as many as I'd like that I felt certain about. Whatever... it should be fine. But I really do hate waiting for results.

To be clear, when I said I "felt good" about approx. 35 questions, I wasn't meaning to say I was sure I got them right. I got a bunch of practice questions wrong that I felt good about when I answered them. I'm just hoping to get about 2/3 of those 35 right.

Possum: it's wrong only if there wasn't a consensual sexual relationship that preceded the legal representation. (And these are the Model Rules. Rules may be different in different states.)

Yes, I had the exact same thought en route to the exam today.

Which means sleep with everyone who walks into your office PRIOR to talking law with them.

The general consensus up here is that it was harder than most expected. The students I talked to said that the questions on the actual test were different than those provided by the test prep companies, including both BarBri and Kaplan, though it's hard to explain exactly how they were different.

As to how I did...who knows.
