Hey guys,
I've read dozens of links on the best Hornbook for Contracts and the Best for Torts, but I still can't come to a solid conclusion. I was wondering if those of you who have been through the classes and used a hornbook could shed some insight on this. Or even if you are currently going through 1L and found a book that you love.

This book has been a Godsend. I picked up a copy on Ebay for 10 bucks, and it has paid for itself many times over.

Ah ... which book are you referencing?

The bolded one - Farnsworth.

I prefer Calamari and Perrilo. Much more readable, and Farns seems to go into more detail than a 1L really requires.

Question: If you are doing E&E's, do you really need a Hornbook? Other angle: What does a Hornbook have to offer that E&E's do not? I've heard that Hornbooks are a little more policy oriented, is that true? My Torts prof. and Prop. prof. are very policy oriented. Any recommendations for those two classes? My k professor, in this regard, is very "by the book" and I don't think she is extremely interested in policy. We shall see though in a few weeks after the practice midterm.

I think it will depend on your professor.

For CivPro, the most used textbook(of any law book in any course) is the Friedenthal/Miller textbook.

The Friedenthal/Miller hornbook is very, very good as a supplement

Torts/Contracts hornbooks can vary in usefulness. i.e. if your prof does a lot of UCC, then the ABCs of UCC will probably be enough along with the E+E.

Prosser and Keeton on Torts is quite long, and no Torts class comes close to covering everything. It probably is not worth purchasing, but maybe perusing in the library if you are stuck on a few topics.

Hmmmm.......I will have to look into that one.

Bump with a question: I am going to buy the Farnsworth hornbook. I can get a copy of the 3rd edition (1999) for 10 bucks. The 4th edition will cost me around 40 bucks used. We use the Farnsworth latest edition casebook, whatever that is.

Does this really matter for Ks? I know for Con Law it would mtter....

it's the same hornbook, just wondering if it is worth an extra 30 dollars to get the newest edition (5 year gap)

contracts is contracts, you know? most of the cases you read in that class are from before 1945.

Dangerous advice. Contracts has a zillion little variations based on locality, teacher's preference, UCC vs. RSC vs. what the cases actually say, etc. My class had some really bizarre twists and turns based on the professors view of Contracts, which rarely matched precisely with what hornbooks had to say.

This post reminds me of why I hated Contracts.
