I just plan on upgrading from my medium size Timbuk2 bag to the larger model. I love these bags!

A plain black Jansport, of course.

I can't believe that after four years of it being extremely dorky to carry around a backpack on my tiny UG campus, I'm back to using a huge-ass backpack for my huge-ass law school books.

I'm using a regular North Face somethingorother back pack. If that's not enough... well, I'll use a suitcase.

I got by very nicely with a messenger bag, but I also drive to school and have a locker. If I had to tote books on a long walk to the train or bus and then lug them around all day, I'm not sure the messenger bag would be the best choice. With all the stairs on campus, however, I'm not sure the rolly bag would do any better.

Depends on what you're looking for. Do you want a utilitarian bag best for carrying books? Or do you want a stylish bag to impress your friends/enemies?

It's kind of small for school items

Sturdy hiking/multi use backpack like the black one picture above (with a lot of room in it), and whatever smaller laptop bag you need. Those messenger bags aren't really good for your back, and get really tiresome on long walks when you are carrying a lot of books. It's much easier to distribute weight between your two shoulders.

Leave the fancy leather messenger bags at home. No one cares if you are being fashionable, and it will suck to lug around 50lbs on one side all the time.

Just get the biggest damn thing you can. Fashion is secondary in law school, unfortunately (unless you're going to be in an urban environment where you may see other people other than law students, and you may care).

I carried a giant backpack that I swore was going to be temporary until I found something better, and ended up using for the entire year. HUGE lifesaver. Expandable. Carried my laptop without needing a laptop cushion bag. Pockets for coffee mug.

Ugly as hell.

May use again next year.

It's the REI Alpine Plus 50, a daypack that is great for both hiking and carrying all my crap to school. I am a summer-start 1L currently biking 8 miles a day to campus, and this is a great way to comfortably carry my books and laptop. There's room to spare for a change of clothes and towel for hitting the gym, too.
I love REI!

This bag is legit. Laptop pocket, book pockets, etc. There are also three small pockets (one on each side and one on the front) that allow you to carry snacks or small items (allergy meds, for example). This bag has been with me to class and for gigs, and I've taken it on the bus and on planes. I've carried upwards of 50 pounds worth of dj kit in it, and it keeps rockin'. The handle on top is especially useful when carrying it through crowded spaces, and the straps are very well padded.
This bag arrived in the mail today and I'm thoroughly impressed. Basically I wanted something that I could put my computer in (with a separate compartment) and a couple casebooks (I spent 1L year with a backpack and separate computer bag - really annoying to have two) and this thing is HUGE. I'm pretty sure you could fit at least 3 casebooks, computer, and a couple smaller books in here and still have room to spare.

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion.

this is why nyu's longer classes (1:50 usually) are better

most books you ever had to bring in one day during 1L was 2

biking to class- dakine. Chest and waist straps really really really make a big difference

driving to class- messanger bag. You don’t need to take every book everyday. You have 2-3 classes a day. You can leave some books in your car or locker.

I got a kenneth cole one (two different ones actually- one black, one brown. If you don't know, don't worry about it ;) ).

The Targus stuff is nice because they use yoke-type shoulder straps, and make their bags really sturdy.
This one is 15.5" x 20.5" x 8", which should be big enough to carry a laptop, three or four books, lunch, and gym clothes.

I've used one for work for years and much prefer it to my North Face backpack.

I got a bag similar to that Targus one as a gift. I'm so excited to actually use it. Best. Bag. Ever.

Would someone mind recommending me a backpack to accommodate a laptop with a 17" screen? I was looking at these

http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=TXL617
http://www.targus.com/us/product_detail ... u=TCG216US
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/100/TB0104

but I'm not sure if any of these will have enough space for my laptop, my books (assuming 3 classes/day), and gym clothes since I plan on using Gold's Gym near my law school. If it matters, I'm going to commute by train daily because I can't afford a car at the moment. Thanks

I'd go with the Targus 17"XL, as noted above. It's the biggest and least expensive of those three you've listed.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
