Well I'd say the decision is a solid 49% mine to make.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
i had 18 roommates in college(!) and the year after. many were terrible, some were whatever, and a few were awesome.brokendowncar wrote:I have had 8 roommates in my four years of college, and only one was annoying (but still bearable). I really can't imagine having the trouble you all claim to have run into. What are these people doing that is so awful?
i will most likely study in the library, but i like to listen to music when i study which keeps me focussed and keeps distractions out.
for the past year i have lived alone, and hate it. i have found out that actually having people around keeps me doing what i should be doing, instead of just being lazy and watching too much tv.
therefore, i will be looking for a roommate, or 2. its nice having the occasional people around. plus, i WILL NOT have a tv in my room...thats just too tempting.

If I end up going to WUSTL I'll probably be living with three of my friends from high school, which will make my living expenses really cheap. Plus they're all extremely motivated (one SLU med student and two working full time by next year) and don't party too much (I'm probably the one that'll pressue them to be irresponsible more often than the other way around). I figure its a win-win. I've always liked having roommates personally though.

The second year of school has me moving to a different country and considering this question. What do you think? Is silence and the ability to leave dishes in the sink worth the extra money?

Fucking hate my roommate. By hate, I mean that she is the dirtiest chick I've ever met. If I saw her on the street without seeing how she takes care of herself, I'd hit it. But since I live with her, oh hell no (well, unless I'm totally FUBAR, in which case I'd have whiskey dick anyway). Can't help with household chores. Garbage can full? Won't touch it! Recycling can full? Nope, too busy. Can't be bothered to help pick up the tab for household supplies. Leaves her shit lying around in the kitchen. Covers the dining nook with her fucking random ass shit (books, bags, makeup, whatever). She left her damn underwear on the fucking dining table. PANTIES ON THE DINING TABLE! THE FUCK??? WHO DOES THAT? My roommate, that's who! Leaves f'ing makeup all over the damn sink, uses my toothpaste but won't pitch in when the tube is running down, and is generally a damn slob. Good thing the gf is easy going about things, and sees that I clean up after myself. Man, if I was bringing home random chicks, they'd probably be scared out of the place by her mess.
She is subletting, and I wish being a shitty roommate was a sufficient reason to terminate her lease.
This experience has made me almost 100%* certain to rent a small studio rather than risk having another shit roommate again.

Unless you know the person, do a single. If money is a problem, stay in the student housing. Most schools have graduate housing. I agree that I want to come home to a quiet place where I can get sleep and not worry about roommates coming in at 3 am. Plus I like a clean place.EddiesGirl29 wrote:Roommates seem too stressful for me. I do most of my studying at the library but I want to come home to a quiet and clean house. I say alone or with a significant other.
I may be biased because I have had some TERRIBLE roommates in the past.
My past roommates are really good friends, but not good roommates, BIG DISTINCTION there.

I am looking to do the same, but I will be on a college campus so housing will be cheap.

live alone! I knew better, but tried to save money, and I'm paying for it now. I'm currently trying to find a way to take out private loans because I'm so desperate to move and there's no way to do so on the budgeted student loans.

In Boston its 1000k a month to live alone, v. currently living with 2 roomates which makes it 650$ a month and can split the utilities or whatever. Work at the library, save the $. Seems like those who live alone are just pissing away money.
Live like a grad student now so you can live like a real adult when you graduate.

You still need to sleep though in order to do all that productive work at the library. If the roommate isn't following a similar schedule, or respectful of yours, its not worth the $350. I guess the better suggestion is make sure you know who you're living with first, what kind of life plan they've got going to make sure you're compatible, or can peacefully coexist.Blindmelon wrote:In Boston its 1000k a month to live alone, v. currently living with 2 roomates which makes it 650$ a month and can split the utilities or whatever. I'm super clean so I wouldn't be able to get any work done at all. I'd be cleaning all the damn time! At $12/day it won't take much to either skimp somewhere else, or pay back a private loan when you're working...samiseaborn wrote:You still need to sleep though in order to do all that productive work at the library. I highly recommend a 2L roommate. Seriously. It's really helpful.

Live with other law students. They work hard too - everyone I know with other law student roomates are fine. Either they're friends or leave each other alone. Saving 15k over 3 years is a lot... man up and take the inconvenience.Unemployed wrote:I highly recommend a 2L roommate. Seriously. It's really helpful.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
This is the first year I have ever lived alone, and so far, it's amazing.
I had six roommates in college- freshman year was fine, sophomore year was great, junior year was so-so, senior year was fine, and my victory lap SUCKED, mostly because I was living with the same guy from the previous year, and he decided to let his girlfriend move in. He became the biggest asshole in the world, and would routinely have loud obnoxious sex when my friends were over. He redefined 'classy'.
In law school, I decided that I'd take a chance and rent a 2BR place...the cost of living is insanely cheap here, so I'm not spending much money at all, and I have ~1,000 square feet to myself. In law school, you just cannot underestimate the importance of Naked Thursdays and Whiskey Fridays.
However, I'm a really social person, so it does get lonely at times (I don't live around other students). I'm honestly thinking about getting a dog to help take my mind off of school and whatnot; living by yourself + having a dog = ++++++++++++EV

Alone. I have gym equipment that can hopefully accompany me and a lot of people might not like a home-gym in a small-ass studio or 1 bedroom apt. Plus, I'm the loner type.
