Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
Thoughts? How much of your studying do you guys do at home vs in the library?

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
Roommates seem too stressful for me. I do most of my studying at the library but I want to come home to a quiet and clean house. I say alone or with a significant other.
I may be biased because I have had some TERRIBLE roommates in the past.

I'm having a roommate because many places in LA are $1300 for a single or $1800 for a two-bedroom. That just makes a lot of sense to me.

I live alone and do a lot of studying at home. I definitely prefer not having the distraction of a roommate, but I also live in an area where living alone is affordable.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
if i can afford it, i'll probably live alone. It's just a lot less stressful. I don't want to deal with a roommate making my places a messy shithole, and conversely, i don't want to get stressed out if i leave the common area a bit messy one day. I think the ideal would be to live in the same apartment complex as a few friends but in my own apartment. That said, if i end up at USC i'll be looking for a roommate.

I do all my studying at home with loud music on. If I had a roommate who also studied at home, he or she would kill me. I also sing along while I'm reading. And I don't sing that well
Since I prefer to live, I vote no roomie or a SO/roomie who is not in school (and can stand my singing).

I can't be comfortable with a roomie (not with naked thursdays anyway)
so probably just get a place to myself.

I live my fiancee. If I had a shitty roommate, I'd have killed them by now. Live alone.

I may be biased cause I've had great roommates in the past, and I don't have many pet peeves.I may be biased because I have had some TERRIBLE roommates in the past.
I can definitely see both sides of the argument though.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
I live with a few other law students and I've had no problems. Granted, my roommates are really laid back and you could end up with shitty roommates. I pretty much split my time between studying at home and at school, but since we all have similar workloads it is a pretty quiet environment. I don't think I could ever have a roommate who wasn't a law student (except a SO) because they wouldn't get what we're going through. Keep in mind that I couldn't possibly afford to live where I do without roommates (~$3,000/month).

You have no idea how much money I'm willing to shelve out just to get a place on my own.

if it's the difference between $100,000 debt and $150,000 in debt, then i'll take the roommate

Shitty roommates can add unneeded stress in your life, detracting from your studies. Low grades will take more than 50k in earning power away from you. Screw the roommate.

the allotment is for 9months.Followup question:
How do you afford a $1300 apartment by yourself if the school only allots $13,000 per year for room/board in their COL analysis?

Probably roomate it up but spend most of waking hours in library. Only need enough space for bed and shoes, will sleep in clothes for the day. I know its gonna suck cause ive lived alone or w/SO for last 3 years. I like watching morning news naked.

yeah, im not sure how they come up with those numbers but i think that is why you're expected to take out private loans.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
I'm living alone for 1L.
Maybe a more affordable roommate situation after that...but every roommate I've had in the past has been crazy. With 1L grades being so important, I think it's worth a little extra rent to have a place you're sure will make you comfy and relaxed and always have available for studying.
I'm on my 3rd roomie right now, and NONE of them would have been okay to live with during law school. I feel like the couple extra thousand I spend on rent will give me the best shot at earning a decent salary out of law school.

Re: Live alone or have a roomate in law school?
maybe ive just been lucky or i have good friends, but ive lived with the same guy for four years and we probably have a cleaner house than 99.95% of people. for two of those years, we had another roommate, and it was still always clean. now we have two other roommates, and its STILL always clean.
maybe cleanliness begets cleanliness?

Alone for me for sure. I like my solitude. However all of my roommates right now are pretty good. We get along great and the place is relatively clean.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
