How do you stay awake?

Post by koalawala » Thu Mar 31, 2016 11:06 pm

I don't get it. How do people stay awake? If I've been up late the night before reading, I physically cannot stop myself falling asleep the next morning (in class, at work, at home). Sometimes, when I'm trying to study, I just find myself with my head on the page, two hours later.

Coffee seems to have no effect. What else can I do? I'm worried this will never work for me...

You're doing something wrong if you're literally up all day and night reading

I work full time, so I'm not up all day reading (except that my job is an office job).

And unfortunately I'm in a jurisdiction (outside the US) where stims are much more difficult to obtain...

You have to make a sacrifice here somewhere though. Your choice on what you decide to take a hit on: School, work, or sleep.

I used to drive 40 minutes, and had a real problem with micro-sleeps at the wheel. I'd wake up veering off the road.

I turn the radio up louder and/o slap myself in the face repeatedly to stay awake in those situations. But I've also gotten better at it with practice.

I used to drink about two coffees and two to three sodas per day in law school. On bad days, I would add red bulls to the combo.

I sure don't miss those days.

You're doing something seriously wrong if it's taking you that much time to study. Don't compensate with drugs or coffee or even more sleep honestly. Figure out if what you're doing is actually going to help you on the exam, and if it's not, stop doing it right now.

You should have a workout regimen, if you don't already. If I'm not going to the gym 3+ times a week, my energy gets sapped easily. Going to the gym (even if it's just to do 20 minutes on the treadmill) makes a huge difference.

If you're really tired then don't go to class. If you're going to class exhausted, falling asleep, then tired the rest of the day because you haven't slept enough you're much worse off than getting your sleep, and doing 2-3 hours of work a day. This time right now is the only time your entire life that appearances and politics don't matter. If you're absorbing the stuff but just falling asleep and are concerned, don't be. Nobody cares. In a decade all people will remember about you are: (1) are you a freak? and (2) are you an asshole?

You don't. Don't fight it. Sleep > everything else.
