Earnings

This is an article about how people still don't really know what money is in 2015. Distributive justice notwithstanding, if you think fiat currency is private property, then it's almost certainly safe to say you didn't build that.

I have never liked anything as much as I like this thread.

I love that LW page. I'll do one about the unified Reny proof of Arrow's / Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem and Whigs.

Accusing Bestselling Author and Mainstream Publication Staple Cass Sunstein of Excessive Abstraction in the Pages of the Harvard Law Review

Image

Richard Epstein wrote:Nor is this intellectual heritage undermined by the broadside claim that laissez faire is an ad hoc invention that I bring to my interpretation of the Constitution. Not so. This French phase was well established by the 1750s, and was certainly in evidence in such works as Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Law of England, which do not even make a cameo appearance in Sherry’s review of the intellectual history leading up to the Founding Period. There is of course no doubt that this general conceptual commitment did not resolve the particular issues that arose with the massive industrialization of the United States, particularly in the post–Civil War period.

This article is about how I am going to have to write about how property is the same thing as privacy but property is not the same thing as wealth about 50,000 times. People can't seriously appeal to oikos and the night watchman state and then retreat to a Galt's Gulch built of lex, dreamy posters of James Madison, and the ubiquitous institutional presence of state currency-legitimizing institutions. I don't know if I agree with Epstein because I didn't actually read his piece and I heard he's good on public trust. This one argues the reader can pretty much either 1) read Hannah Arendt, or 2) consider that when nation-states fight civil wars, there are generally substantive ideological matters at issue. Sometimes there are even changes in the structure of the public sphere, such that ideas of equity and dignity might take priority over ideas like, say, parsing out archaic phrases and treating the Leviathan interface like a New York Times airport publication word game. I could be wrong. It's not, like, a mathematical proof or anything.

This is an article about how if Richard Epstein can argue that laissez-faire being a phrase in 1776 is relevant, then I can write on the utopian socialist Constitution.

I have a theory that Cass Sunstein just has a list of topics he wants to read about and as an incentive if you write a research paper he'll put his name on it

Topic choices are basically open ended, so not specific at all. And yes, I can on a pretty basic level, but just need to be able to write ~35 pages on wtv I end up going with.

Sorry this took so long. I made this thread to take requests and I was trying to think of a good one.

How Nussbaum's "Hiding from Humanity..." is not as good as Donna Haraway's When Species Meet and Peter Singer's Animal Rights is the highest-order reductionist model of this ethical deduction we have going right now.

Not that I know anything
