Wow, thanks to both of you for such quick responses! This is great to hear--obviously there are many, many steps to go but good to know it's still a possible option!I'm sure I'll be looking back to this forum in the future as more questions arise.S. I believe there is a common sense factor that will be taken into consideration.TheSpanishMain wrote:I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the only differences in medical requirements as far as vision goes are between pilots and non-pilots. I suspect what you're describing would be waivable, but you're smart to do some research before you invest a lot of time and energy in pursuing a JAG spot.

Student loan repayment - unsolicited advice
SCRA - Servicemembers Civil Relief Act; you can take advantage of this benefit, you just have to send a copy of your orders to the institutions that hold your debt (bank/private loan, credit card company, FedLoan Servicing). One of the benefits is that SCRA caps your interest rate at 6% while you're active duty: https://scra.dmdc.osd.mil
FedLoan Servicing currently has a serious backlog of Income Driven Repayment (IDR) requests - and you need to be in an IDR loan repayment plan in order to take advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Backlog like - they usually process requests in 30 days, and right now they still haven't processed requests received 80+ days ago. A supervisor said IDR exploded in popularity this spring plus their online application crashed recently and they haven't yet caught up - they're really nice if you call, but you need to be persistent (and keep track of who you talk to/customer agent # and when - it helps when you have to call for the 11th time and repeat everything that has already happened but you can recite dates/names/numbers).
Send in your application ASAP for IDR if you're planning to.. and then you can also call the FedLoan Servicing Military Line (you'll get directed there immediately once they tag you as military) and ask them to expedite your application.
Good luck!

I am a Fall 2016 selection and just got commissioned three weeks ago. 4 to 7 months from selection to commissioning is not an uncommon timeline, unfortunately. I leave for ODS this Saturday though!baileymjd wrote:Has anyone from the Spring 2017 selection board been commissioned yet? Or where are you guys in the process?

For those who have been to ODS, what day do you recommend reporting? The ODS website say lodging is available after 1600 on Friday (which seems way too early), so should I show up on Saturday afternoon and have some time to unpack and relax or on Sunday morning right before everything starts?

I haven't been yet (going in October) but I'm told that late Saturday/early Sunday is the way to go. You really don't need much time to hang your stuff up and familiarize yourself. Once you've done that, you're just going to be sitting in a depressing barracks room staring at the wall if you show up too early.Voynich wrote:For those who have been to ODS, what day do you recommend reporting? That is pretty much what I figured; I spent a lot of time staring at depressing barracks room walls when I was enlisted. It is always weird to show up early and have nothing to do.TheSpanishMain wrote:I haven't been yet (going in October) but I'm told that late Saturday/early Sunday is the way to go. Has anyone heard whether they still require us to buy NWU Type I's in ODS, or are they switching to Type III's? I know they're switching to Type III's in 2018, so it doesn't make sense to have us buy a Type I in ODS just to never wear it by the time we start, but, y'know, military. Has anyone heard? What did they require of the folks in last ODS?

Dental Visit
- Can anyone who went to ODS, is going to ODS tell me if I need to get a checkup with my dentist, or if I can just go grab my most recent dental records?
Much obliged.

Those who have gone to ODS, can you use a debit/credit card to buy food or do they only take cash?

Re: Military Law - Navy Jag Student Program
My recruiter said I am waiting for my commissioning to be approved on the congressional scroll before I can sign commissioning paperwork and receive an ODS date. Does anyone else have to wait for this? Any idea how long it will take? I would love to go to ODS in October but now I'm worried it wont be ready in time.

Cash. Everyone turns it into one student and the student pays the galley on behalf of the company.

I think mine took maybe two weeks. Not that long.lunchbox wrote:My recruiter said I am waiting for my commissioning to be approved on the congressional scroll before I can sign commissioning paperwork and receive an ODS date. Re: Military Law - Navy Jag Student Program
So the uniform shop at OTC Newport is one of three that carries the type 3. The fleet has been slow to roll it out, so everyone in this class has had to call their duty station and ask what they are wearing (but are also getting type 3s anyways because that is what will be worn as of next year). The only sucky thing is if your base wants you in Type 1 knowing that you'll have to get both.Stubbazubba wrote:Has anyone heard whether they still require us to buy NWU Type I's in ODS, or are they switching to Type III's? We don't wear the working uniform at ODS anymore. (Current student)

jbrennanmac wrote:Hi there,
First time poster here--thanks to all who have maintained this thread. Reading through it has given me more information than I've been able to find anywhere else about the JAG selection process. I am starting law school this fall and have had an interest in a Navy JAG career for quite a while. It certainly isn't my only reason for attending law school, but it is a path I would very interested in pursuing. My question is regarding medical waivers--I was born with strabismus (basically, born cross-eyed), and I had 4 corrective surgeries for it as a child. The last one was prior to my freshman year of high school, so well over a decade ago. I wear moderate-strength contacts/ glasses and have mild astigmatism (I currently don't wear astigmatism-correcting lenses because I find them a bit uncomfortable and don't particularly need 20/20 vision in my civilian life, but I certainly could). My vision is fine, depth perception isn't great, but obviously this doesn't pose any issues towards being a good attorney. However, I don't know if this will disqualify me from military service.
I know vision requirements seem unrelated to this thread, but I have had trouble finding any info on vision waivers for staff officers vs pilots, SEALS, etc. If anyone has any experience with medical waivers for vision, I'd love to hear it--I'd hate to invest time and hope in pursuing a JAG career only to be thwarted at the end for my eyesight. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone might have!
I wouldn't stress too much about vision if you're not going to be a pilot. This instruction lists the basic medial requirements...hope it helps.

Saul or any other prior service types who have gone to ODS:
How easy or not was it to get your pay straightened out so you were being paid with your prior years of service?

All the prior service people in my NJS class had lots of trouble. Because of the weird way JAG does things and that you go into a non-pay status between ODS and NJS - even if your pay is right at ODS it is typically screwed up at Justice School. I did not get mine sorted out until I got to my first command. It was pretty quick then, it all depends on how good your PSD is. You will eventually get all the back pay, but it was very frustrating during NJS.
Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Anyone know when we find out our duty station assignments? My recruiter told me we would find out towards the end of NJS, but older thread comments make it sound like we know much earlier.
