Help with Word: Table of Contents for my (printed) outline

So my secured transactions outline is finished. It's printed, in color. Wasn't cheap. Woo!

But now I need to create a table of contents. Which is surprisingly difficult in Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac, especially since I didn't use the "headings" feature while writing my outline (because I don't outline like that).

Going through now and using the "headings" changes the font, color, size, format, etc. of the language. In other words, it completely fucks up my outline - which is already printed, with page numbers and everything.

So...any advice? The manual table of contents feature is utter shit (or the user is utter shit). To create new lines manually in the ToC, it advises you to copy+paste old headings. But this completely fucks with the indentation/style.

I don't mind creating one manually. I.e., going through my entire outline and writing headers/page numbers. But I just can't get the formatting template set up.

Hopefully there are some Office savants around here that can help. Thanks for taking the time to read this

Okay so I have run into this problem before and honestly there isn't much you can do in word aside from highlighting and changing the profiles for each item you want included in your table of contents. I actually like the app pages for mac a little better than word for this reason. It might be worth it to print out your outline and then use pages to complete your table of contents/index etc. One option you might also try for future reference is quimbee.com they have an outliner in beta format that works pretty well and also will generate a table of contents. The directions however for creating the TOC in word are as follows: In your document, select the words to include in the table of contents, and then on the Home tab, under Styles, click a heading style. Repeat for each heading that you want to include, and then insert the table of contents in your document. What you have to do is preset your styles to the format that you want as used in the doc and then apply the styles to the word or words you want included in your TOC. Sorry if that is a cluster-f*%$ of a response hopefully you can get some good use though from it. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm finding out there's no easy solution. I guess I'm creating a bootleg manual outline. Thanks for the heads up re: quimbee
