Help with Word: Table of Contents for my (printed) outline

So my secured transactions outline is finished. It's printed, in color. Wasn't cheap. Woo!
But now I need to create a table of contents. Which is surprisingly difficult in Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac, especially since I didn't use the "headings" feature while writing my outline (because I don't outline like that).
Going through now and using the "headings" changes the font, color, size, format, etc. of the language. In other words, it completely fucks up my outline - which is already printed, with page numbers and everything.
So...any advice? The manual table of contents feature is utter shit (or the user is utter shit). To create new lines manually in the ToC, it advises you to copy+paste old headings. But this completely fucks with the indentation/style.
I don't mind creating one manually. I.e., going through my entire outline and writing headers/page numbers. But I just can't get the formatting template set up.
Hopefully there are some Office savants around here that can help. Thanks for taking the time to read this
