I find reviewing recorded lectures completely unhelpful, because it takes so long. And way too much of class time is taken up by student discussion getting to the point that you need to get - reviewing notes would be more efficient and quicker. But you'd have to ask each professor individually. Some will be fine with it, some may not. (The only time lectures were recorded at my school was for a specific student who had to miss weeks of class for a medical reason.)

well, speaking from personal experience, in any class where the professor allows laptops, a good portion of the students will record without asking for permission

don't know if it helps, but know that it happens.

also, stealth use of recorders happens a lot

Most of my 1L profs explicitly forbade it, and it was against school policy (and honor code) to do so without permission. Not saying it didn't happen, but there you go. Of course, one of my 1L profs followed pretty much the same script as the prof who recorded the Sum and Substance for that subject, and one of my 2L profs DID record the S&S for that subject, so those already had abridged class lectures for listening to later.

Lol I cant imagine sitting through class then going home and listening to a recording of all that BS. Wtf are you thinking. If you're gonna do this then plant a device in class and pick it up later so you don't double up like that.
