What classes are you taking during 2L & 3L?

Post by MonsterTRM » Thu May 01, 2014 9:51 pm

I'd love to gauge your all's opinions. I'm not sure what route I want to go, but I'd love to know classes that people think are totally worthwhile, and those that are worthless. I know everyone says "take courses you're interested in, not just bar courses." What are you taking and why?

Evidence is a must. Is it even an option at any school?

I'd take Evidence, Tax, and Crim Pro. Avoid the rest and take more interesting courses.

Um, yes? At NU the only post-1L required class is ethics.

A clinic is a must if you'd ever consider public interest. Also, to be a certified legal intern (i.e. able to appear in court under the supervision of an attorney), most states I believe require that you take Evidence.

Does NU have a crim pro class? Is it Constitutional Crim Pro, or is that something else?

Evidence for sure (unless you really really know you will never litigate...and even then you should because it's a great class). I liked admin but a lot of people hate it. Looking forward to crim pro. Trial ad is a lot of work but also really awesome. Family law seems interesting but meh not necessary unless you want to practice in that area. I lovedddd my clinic but they are a shit ton of work.

As you can tell I'm a litigation nerd so if you're all about transactional work you may hate everything I liked.

Admin. Good for litigation and transactional work. I'd recommend taking this class if you anticipate interacting with federal or state government agencies. In your career, will you need to create regulations, interpret government regulations, seek enforcement of government regulations, or challenge government regulations?

What about that criminal process class only offered in the fall? Is that criminal procedure or something else?

Evidence.

I also think Clinic experience is becoming more and more valuable in the evolving job market. Employers are much more interested in people with actual practical experience, and clinics are even more valuable for students who go "straight through" than they are for those of us who worked between UG and LS.

I don't get why everyone says tax. For a non-transactional attorney, it never comes up. You won't learn enough to ever use it.

Where's corporations in this list? Corporations/business associations is the course with the most overlap with pretty much every area of law practice. It's much more useful than evidence.

I agree. I took corporations, and it was useful, but I really wish I had taken a general BA course instead. I think there's more value in general BA than corporations alone.

Yeah--I'd say this list is not at all geared toward someone who wants to do business law.

Not required here but I only know a few people who aren't taking it.

At my school Evidence is not technically required in order to graduate, but the consensus is obviously that it would be a lousy idea not to take it.

I said tax and don't disagree with this

I'm interested in IP so took 2 core classes and 3 IP related ones. Gotta get that transcript in order for the summer job hunt.
