Citing COA Cases

So according to the BB, COA cases are cited like this (4th Cir. 1980).

But just came across SCOTUS cases citing COA cases like this (CA4 1980)...totally confused now.

SCOTUS has their own internal style guide. See also that they use "ibid." in some instances instead of "id." I think also CA4 is the way that you used to search databases. CA4 stands for "Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit."

Many courts and jurisdictions use all sorts of citations styles. In addition, older cases may be using older iterations of the Bluebook.
