Spend a few minutes on Google.

Here's a decent place to start:

TO TSL and other practicing lawyers: I am starting to feel the anxiety of the impending job search, and I have a question. I'm mostly interested in a secondary/tertiary market, and most of the firms there aren't going to be at OCI. When and how do I start reaching out to the firms I'm interested in? Do I just cold email recruiting directors from their websites in July/August?

That sounds about right. If you're going to be spending your summer in the area or blowing through for part of it, it's great to reach out and be all "BY THE WAY I'll be next door the following dates," which both shows your commitment to the region and gives them a kick in the pants for scheduling an interview.

Otherwise, by the time you get to mid to late summer you should blot out the skies with applications to the places you're looking. Ideally you'll at least wait until you have your smiley-faces / slightly-less-smiley faces, or whatever it is that pass for grades at yaal these days. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about being "too early" or applying unsolicited. Without OCI, you really have to beat down their doors.

I'm spending my summer in the same state as the cities I want, so I have that going for me. Good to know that there's not too much worry about being too early. I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna have a lot of :| grades, but I'll still wait until I get them all and maybe start emailing in late June. Thanks!

He is. Anxiety about anxiety is both cute and sad. Get some Xanax or something, friend. At this rate, you're going to need it.

Haha yes, and yes.

OCI bidding has started, and they don't seem to be too amped on median students with average backgrounds and no law review/moot court who can really pick out a tie

Damn your OCI is early. We have another 3 weeks or so before bidding starts.

I don't think it's "due" for quite a while. But honestly I barely understand it.

TSL (or anyone), got a question for you about the OCI cover letter template you posted here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=156659

My bids are due by July 15th, and it looks like all employers on Symplicity have a slot to include a cover letter. Couple of questions.

1. As far as who it is addressed to ("Dear X"), would it be wise to just the name given for a contact (Associate Recruitment Member John Smith), or stick to the way you have it?

2. Regarding 1L summer work, does it make sense to talk about my current internship, or does it sound stupid to talk about experiences and what I've learned from something that's not even half complete?

Assuming your OCI is lottery and not pre-select, your cover letter won't matter. Address it to the given contact or the NALP contact listed for the office. You can talk about your summer job if you want, but I'd keep the letter as short as possible if you already have the screener. The only thing a letter can really do is hurt you if you have a typo or otherwise phrase things awkwardly. Chances are none of the interviewers will read them. Half the interviewers at OCI don't even look at the resume and transcript until you are in the room with them anyway. You are going tell them whatever it was you were going to put in the cover letter at the interview.

If your OCI is pre-select, then you should sell yourself the best you can, since that will be the only other extraneous information the firm gets from you aside from your resume and transcript. Absolutely talk about your summer. It still probably won't matter, since I think pre-selects tend to focus more on weeding out grades than anything else.

I don't know which it is. The vast majority of employers have some criteria listed, none of which I have. At a T2 school with my academic standing, I feel like this is pointless.

At a T2 it's probably pre-select. Do you have to bid (submit some kind of list of firms you want to interview with in order of preference), or are you just submitting materials through symplicity? If the latter, it's probably pre-select.

i'm taking a summer class (its like a program where you can opt to take contracts i nthe summer within for 6 weeks and take 3 classes in the fall)

i'm kinda bugging out, i don't know what im doing. Like I actually understand the cases, principles, rulings, etc but I don't know how to outline correctly.

I find fully briefing to be stupid honestly, I don't get why i should sit there and write the facts and what not. I find the core quickly. but i don't know what im doing relating to creating an outline...

Truthfully, I feel like i'm doing something wrong. I feel like i'm not writing down enough stuff but i don't know what im missing

I wish there was a way to gauge how I'm doing..

The latter. So I assume a lot of places will just be chopping applicants off at a certain GPA. I guess that's better than getting an interview with someone who will not even considered hiring me.

No matter what you think your actual chances are, try your best to be confident in everything related to the interview. There's nothing they can do but turn you down so you might as well put your best foot forward. And you never fucking know.

Are you an incoming 1L? First off, relax, don't panic. Everyone is as lost as you are. If briefing cases is not helpful to you, there is no reason to continue doing it. It's helpful to some, but most people stop briefing relatively quickly, since all that matters is being able to extract the meat of the case. As for outlining, since I'm assuming you don't know any 2Ls or 3Ls, the best thing you can do is track down some sample contracts outlines. I don't recommend you use them substantively, but you can at least use them as a guide for what an outline should look like.

Also, look into supplements if you start to feel lost. Remember, everyone is in the same boat.
