Need advice

Postby splittermcsplit88 » Fri May 31, 2013 9:55 pm

I just got my torts grade back and I dropped from B+(1st sem) to D+. I got a B+ on the midterm so I was not worried, but at the end of the final, I remember pressing the previous button on Examsoft a few times and I remember the word count shrinking from 9000 to 8000. I asked the IT guy about this and he said there was nothing he could do, so I just let it go thinking I was paranoid. Unfortunately, I'm back in my hometown so I can't really review my exam with the prof, but I'm definitely requesting a grade review. How do I handle this? Should I call Examsoft as well?

If everything turns out fine, I'm going to drop out because I've fallen below median at a TT. My question is ... what other career paths could I pursue? Masters programs seem very difficult to get into. I'm K-JD, majored in political science.

No advice, but you're in my prayers.

I find it real interesting that you think master's programs are difficult to get into. Why do you say that? What type of programs? I have always figured most master's programs at elite skools are easier to get into than their undergrad programs.

If you want to print money and do not really care whether you actually have a passion/interest in job/career, go get a master's in construction management from a respectable school. You will make $60Kish starting off and easily make six figures 10-15 years from now if you progress well in your career. You shouldn't have much trouble getting admitted into these programs even with your poli. sci. undergrad and would most likely not have to take any additional courses or prereqs. to get into programs.

Well, if you are going to drop out if it's not changed (which in that event would probably be the right thing to do), you might as well go balls out trying to get it changed. What exactly does the "previous button" on Examsoft do? Is erasing part of your exam answer part of what it is supposed to do, or was it some sort of freak error? Did you receive any warning that hitting the button could erase part of your answer? Did you go to any Examsoft training? If you can show this was an error or mistake, then you should have a decent shot at SOME kind of remedy, because that just isn't fair and the school should ensure that the software you are required to take your exams on works properly for everyone. If that is what is supposed to happen and you just didn't know, then it might be a bit tougher. Either way, talk to as many people and take this as high up as you can in order to get it changed. Good luck.

Let me just express skepticism that exam soft lost 1000 of your words because you pressed the previous button. That program has built in fail safes up the asshole, with constant autos saves (hence the perceived lag). Short of the thing crashing (and more likely it's the operating system that failed when peoples computers conck out during an exam) what you typed is there. And even if it crashed, it still has your save file up to the point of the crash and they can retrieve that (and you switch to handwritting for the rest of the exam). And a call to exam soft won't do anything. Imagine how many calls they get from students claiming the program messed up their exam. Their telephone operator's script probably has a big "eye roll" mark before they read the canned answer. And even if the program lost your words you'll never prove it (and I'm saying this with doubt that it did).

Sorry for the bad grade, I can only imagine the distress and heart sinking feeling. Seems law school isn't for you. Good luck.

Pure conjecture.

As you noted, the Examsoft files are auto-saved on the user's computer. If 1,000 words were lost, Examsoft may have a recovery mechanism that can uncover all or a portion of the material.

I've been able to run programs that have recovered files wiped from my thumb drive and photo card. Chances are Examsoft has similar programs.

1.) how common is exam soft? Word seems to rarely have these issues? Seems lame legal futures are determined by technology failing.

2.) if grades stay the same i'd personally drop out unless (1) it was near free and (2) i studied less than median and still performed close to it. If you busted ass and are below median at a t-2, it may just not be where your skills lie. If you're 23 don't figure well i invested time and need to do something. You're still young, and likely to have undiscovered talents.

Also, don't underestimate the value of experiencing failure. Recognizing failure and building yourself back creates grit which is the number one personality trait for success. Denying failure just makes you a jackass. I'm not saying you failed, but analyze everything for the next month.

Soooo glad we don't use Examsoft except to upload our Word docs. And if a grade ends up bizarrely off like that, we can challenge it by showing them the original file saved on our computers (as long as it has the original timestamp).

Thanks guys. I'm hoping for anything right now. Last term, my prof entered a grade wrong and I got it fixed so :( Btw, I'd really appreciate any help figuring out an alternate career path right now ... I'm looking at programs like Columbia's SIPA, but they look pretty competitive. What could I possibly do with a poli sci degree?

I know, right? The way he said shutup, stellar. An internet superstar that guy, he sure put me in my place for calling out OP's unfortunate delusion that he didn't fail on his own merits and that, instead, the exam software itself is to blame. He's protecting OP from reality and mean people on the internet. Gold stars, all around.

At elite programs most masters are instead BA/BS to PhD programs. They are fully funded with a stipend and cohorts are typically extremely small (think like 12). They are far more difficult to get into than elite law schools.

Nah, a lot of them also have standalone Masters programs that are basically moneyprinting machines for their institutions. They let tons of people in and generally give very little aid. Example: http://maph.uchicago.edu/
