I agree that the samples are a good place to start. But note that these are not always selected because they're the best submissions. The ed board may just ask if anyone wants their submission to be used as a sample, making the selection somewhat random.

This is absolutely true.

The best way to write on is to put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be grading your submission and think about what you'd be looking for.

Will you (the grader) know the material extremely well? (No, so don't worry about nuances so much.) Will you give an original, difficult-to-prove thesis the credit it deserves, if you're even able to identify one as such? (No, so go for an easily written and easily defended thesis.) Will you make sure all the nitpicky and oft arbitrary rules are met, all grammar is correct, and all sentence structure is clear? (YES. Be meticulous, and proof read two dozen times.)

In short, write for your audience - an upper level student who wants to get on with his summer.

I should re-read my materials, but for the essay part of my write-on, IIRC it says they're not even grading our citations (probably because we just did a 2 day cite thing). I guess they're trying to focus on the content.

I would advise skipping the writing competition. Not making law review is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. Members have told me that 1) nobody cared about journal at OCI and 2) working on a journal makes 2L all the more miserable.

Yea, but depending on what school you go to, not making law review pretty much kills your chance at getting a decent clerkship.

I know the write-on sucks, but push through it.

Fuck Courier New. It's so hard to tell whether I added a space.

Also: every sentence is a struggle.

set microsoft word to use those little dots for spaces. It saves me a ton of time when I bluebook.

Courier New is the worst. I can see the spaces fine, but it is so irritating to read. I could write in something else but then I'd have to pay more attention to the length and it's easier to just complain about it.

Seriously? Why don't you just...write it in another font and switch to Courier New to print?

I didn't realize it would be an issue at first, and I don't want to mess up my footnote formatting.

Also im kinda over it.

Yeah we had to write our essay in it at Penn. I didn't mind it after a little, though it made it weird to look at other fonts for a while after haha.

The biggest challenge for most people is to actually finish the package.
