I got a C, how f***** am I ?
Got an A in property, A- in legal writing, still waiting on my grade in Torts and a C in civil procedure. Wtf. It was a hard test but I didnt realize how bad I truly did. I was thinking B- or B but not below median. If I get an A in torts im looking at a 3.4 which is about top 25% or so. I could certainly recover though with a great 2nd semester
Im scared to death of this C. Is it going to prevent me from finding any sunmer work? I just dont understand how I get an A on property and a C in civ pro

Sorry to hear that bro. This will be more common on this forum (it was last year during my 1L). LS grading is not a science and can be ridiculously tolling. Go in and talk to your professor, see what went wrong, and fix that before next semester. Not sure how hard that grade will make finding 1L summer work (it was insanely hard for me to get work but my market is oversatured, and the job I got did not even want a transcript...). If you recover second semester its something you will have to talk about in OCI, but should not be a deal ender.

Re: I got a C, how f***** am I ?
I had a similar experience with a total left field B- my first semester and was still able to finish near the top of my class for what it's worth. Getting A/A-/C seems particularly anomalous, though, so I would definitely look into it when you get your exam back. If it was part MC maybe something happened with the scantron?
In any case, you're only going to fuck yourself more if you convince yourself you're fucked. If you let it affect your work ethic or let yourself go crazy worrying about it, it's only going to make it harder to perform next semester. As hard as it is, even if the grade stands, you can't let it get to your head.
Also, slightly in your advantage is the fact that a random C will be easier for an employer to write off as a crazy professor or something equally arbitrary. I would much rather hire a consistent A student with one freak C than a consistent B+ student.

Give me a break. I got Big Law below-median. I'd kill for 25%.MinEMorris wrote:I had a similar experience with a total left field B- my first semester and was still able to finish near the top of my class for what it's worth. This is getting off topic. This is good for you, so way to derail this thread to stroke your peen, but you do not know where the OP goes to school and what that school's cutoffs are for OCI.sparty99 wrote:Give me a break. Re: I got a C, how f***** am I ?
2 huge pieces of information are missing in this thread: (1) what is the curve at your school (2) what you will actually get in torts.
If you're at a school where C+ is the median then a C is definitely no big deal. If you're at a school where nobody ever gets a C+ let alone a C then it's a different story. Also, assuming you will get an A in any law class ever is foolish. Getting an A in Property (which can be the most difficult class in law school) and a C in Civ Pro is proof that law students should never assume anything about their grades.
Assuming you are at a school where Cs are uncommon or unheard of then a C in the 1st semester of 1L is definitely not a one way ticket to the gutter. Biglaw is probably an uphill climb, but if your sights are lower you can definitely survive. I had a far outlier grade and 9 out of 10 employers I interviewed with cared only about my cumulative GPA. Out of the more than 40 job interviews I did (including callbacks) my outlier grade only came up once. I'm sure some saw a low grade and threw out my resume but I ended up with a job which is all that really matters at the end of the day.

It probably won't change anything, but maybe your test ID number got swapped or something during blind grading. Just go and check to make sure you did as bad as you think.
I wish you the best. Hope you got an A in torts.

Doesn't matter.....Top 25% is top 25%. If you can't get interviews with Top 25%, then no one should go to law school.Gorki wrote:This is getting off topic. I go to a T2 thats almost T1. Median is between a B- and a B. C is approx bottom 15-25%ish depending on how mean the teacher is but Cs and Ds are mandatory so im assuming its not uncommon.

Remember that time you got a C in your 7th grade middle school biology desert biome report? You're toast. Better just quit now.noleknight16 wrote:Got an A in property, A- in legal writing, still waiting on my grade in Torts and a C in civil procedure. Wtf. In all seriousness, chill out. If you can't find something through your school, cold call people from your local bar registry and ask to help around their office for minimum wage or free. It's hard to turn down cheap and willing labor.

Lol? Because the two situations are eminently analogous.typ3 wrote:Remember that time you got a C in your 7th grade middle school biology desert biome report? You're toast. Regardless, OP, just relax. Talk to the professor and find out what you did wrong, and then improve it for next semester.

Not is is not. Top 25% at CCN =/= Top 25% at random t30 =/= Top 25% at Cooley (all networking and personal connections aside, because honestly if you have those your GPA is no longer that important anyway), either in terms of prestige, or quantity (Cooley has over 1k, closer to 2k students).sparty99 wrote:

You should be fine, assuming your other grades are good. One outlier is understandable for most places. Cumulative GPA is definitely more important than a single class grade.
Use Glannon for second semester and keep on rocking.

One caveat about networking/personal connection: it will only get you so far. Most firms's hiring committee consists of several partners. Networking/personal connection may get you the screener, or in some cases a call back. You still need to sell yourself hard to other partners. It's different if your mom/dad/family relative owns a law firm.
With that say, I agree with what kalvano said. Study hard and rock it next semester. One bad grade is more acceptable than multiple bad grades.

I agree it depends which school you go to. If you go to a T2 a C is a huge problem.

Not really. A bunch of C's is a problem. One in a sea of A's is an abberration.

Considering you have a C in civ/pro and an A in property, try looking for an internship related to property (where they probably don't care about civ/pro). your GPA/rank will be important, but you should be able to BS having a strong interest in the field and really want to learn more about it.noleknight16 wrote:Got an A in property, A- in legal writing, still waiting on my grade in Torts and a C in civil procedure. This just seems a little stupid. I will say this: I hope you don't want to be a litigator. Don't freak out until you get your grade from torts. Plus, you still have next semester to fix this shenanigan and keep moving forward. Everyone hates civ pro. Correction, I hate civ pro.dingbat wrote:Considering you have a C in civ/pro and an A in property, try looking for an internship related to property (where they probably don't care about civ/pro). your GPA/rank will be important, but you should be able to BS having a strong interest in the field and really want to learn more about it.noleknight16 wrote:Got an A in property, A- in legal writing, still waiting on my grade in Torts and a C in civil procedure. This. You killed 2 of your 3 classes, and it could be 3/4. Don't let one C destroy your semester!kalvano wrote:Not really. A bunch of C's is a problem. One in a sea of A's is an abberration.kingofdara wrote:I agree it depends which school you go to. If you go to a T2 a C is a huge problem.
