An important insight is that many professors who hate on long exams do so because a lot of long exams aren't just long, they're also rambling regurgitation of law or fact without analysis. It's exceedingly rare to find a professor who hates long exams intrinsically, but somewhat common to find professors who are tired of people that get nervous and start dumping their outline haphazardly on the page.
Of course, it could happen, so always try to read, respond to, and please your prof.
