Most of the peeps I go to school with say they haven't even begun and/or are barely halfway done with outlining. They're all lying IMO.

Re: OFFICIAL 1L Exam Prep & Motivation Thread (CSWS)
In my section there seem to be a lot of people (most, really) who aren't making their own outlines for at least 1 class and are just relying on updating good old outlines (we only have 3 doctrinal this semester, plus legal writing, FWIW). I'd say in general people at my school are about half done outlining, maybe a bit more. From what I can gather, everyone who wanted to outline had, at the latest, started over Thanksgiving.gaud wrote:Most of the peeps I go to school with say they haven't even begun and/or are barely halfway done with outlining. No, sorry! (you can check out my posting history and probably figure out where I go in about 5 seconds if you're really curious haha, but I don't want to specifically reveal it here)Rawlberto wrote:Need a compressed K checklist. Someone get at me.

My Ks class covered 39 different issues of contracts this semester. I could just do "Damages" but that includes expectation, reliance, buyer remedies, seller remedies, etc. etc. etc.gaud wrote:+1 por favorRawlberto wrote:Need a compressed K checklist. Someone get at me.

A few people post things on FB about how their Thanksgiving was a vacation / break with family.
No pictures, no trust... >_>
Although some pretty honest about how much work they're doing. Seems as if the norm is having outlined about three of four classes.
UnamSanctam: Um, no sir. Today.

Contracts: LOL I get smoked in this class every day. Am fucked.
Torts: I don't even know what the fuck is going on. Concepts are way too loose for my liking.
Civ Pro: My favorite class, but I get bent over hard.

Re: OFFICIAL 1L Exam Prep & Motivation Thread (CSWS)
Tips on structuring essays?
Right now I do something like this for torts -> Duty, Breach, Causation, Damages -> possible defenses maybe one of the intervening causes is superseding or contributory negligence -> Damages
Criminal Law -> Crime -> Defense -> Grading -> Policy (Prof is obsessed with policy)
A second question: How are you guys making it easy for your professors to find your points? Right now I generally paragraph whenever I talk about new law or new premise. This is sometimes causes me to have one-two sentence paragraphs, so is this credited? I feel like underlining and bolding just takes to much time for me. I do bold and underline major headings tho such as "State v MJ" or "Andrew v Peyton Negligence"

I underlined elements and create new paragraphs for premises.
For headings I do the issue instead of the parties. (LEEWS)

Mine are probably only valid to my own professors because their exams are pretty unique (well, my contracts exam is about as standard an issue spotter as you can get), but I'll offer my advice...swimmer11 wrote:Tips on structuring essays?

Torts: Each question basically focuses on 2-3 big issues (a lot of policy analysis is expected, of course). Sometimes a question will basically make you go through all the steps of negligence, but generally its just to focus on one aspect of it (like proximate cause, or whatever), possible defenses, and then there'll be vicarious liability or assault/battery also thrown in. So basically I'll just structure it by issue.
Civ Pro: My professor asks pretty specific questions, and breaks up the hypo into a lot of parts. So basically you don't have to issue spot, just analyze, and since there are a lot of different questions, it's just organized that way.
Contracts: Basically two long hypos with lots of issues. I'm just going to go through all the elements of a contract (was there one, what were the terms, was there performance/breach, and then a little about damages) more or less in order. LOTS of issues in my professors exams, and from what I can gather organization isn't really that important, so my exam will definitely be a lot of "word vomit".
As for underlining/bolding, hadn't even thought about this. I try to make a new paragraph every time I'm discussing a new issue, and generally start it off saying exactly what I'll be discussing. I figure that'll be enough... I hope. Haha.

Outlining is a thing of the past (27, 21, 20, and 18 pages). Yuh
Had my ass handed to me by questions 21-40 of the Contracts Siegel's, so I'm going through each of the questions/answers in the Contracts E&E before hitting the first third of Siegel's essay questions. Not letting this setback slow me down though, the pieces are falling together and now that I have pure study time, this class better pepper its angus. CSWS

I, personally, find them helpful. He puts everything in a chronological order, and he even does hypos to go step by step on how you should answer if you're doing an essay.
