The only thing more fun than Guitar Hero III? LexisNexis buying it for you...

...also, Rock Band. :)

Should E&Es be to date, or would it be just as beneficial (and cheaper) to read previous editions before 1L? At what point would a book be too old to be beneficial?

They rev them every few years. I'd get the newest ones just because they haven't been around as long as other supplements, and some are still improving a lot with each new edition. Property (3rd ed.) and Civil Procedure (6th ed.) are just coming out this month. The rest of the 1L subjects seem up to date for 2008-09 at least.

Yeah PK, you could do like Sock and go back and edit.

Thank you for this thread and all the contributions- this really is valuable and a lot of the advice will be put to good use.

How do you accumulate WestLaw/LexisNexis points?

Mainly by doing online training sessions. If you ask me, it is a waste of time. You have to get a ton of points for any worthwhile prizes. I think people's time is worth more than that.

I'd love some people who do this religiously to chime in and let us know if they feel like the training sessions have actually helped their internet research methods.

I don't do the online ones religiously. The ones I've done may have helped slightly, but I know that the training classes have helped tremendously. I went to the Westlaw Prepare to Practice, and it was great. I just didn't want to be "that gal" who ran up a huge Westlaw bill this summer at the firm.

The Lexis Advanced training and Westlaw Advanced training were both also really helpful.

I did the lexis fact or fiction every morning all last semester, earned about 7000 points over the course of the fall, and spent most of them on Guitar Hero. I noticed about midway through the semester that I was waaay better at navigating Lexis than West, primarily because of these fact or fiction questions (they seem to generally be tasks similar to those required for legal writing courses, and the "hint" button gives a step-by-step walk through of how to find the answer). The tutorials are pretty much worthless, but spending 2 minutes a day learning how to do simple tasks on lexis pays pretty decent dividends, both in terms of points earned and ability to navigate the site.

So it's your fault they nerfed the fact or fiction points!

Nerfed? Pffft.... I've built up another 6000 this semester. It's all about consistency.

they moved it down from 50 points a day (25 fact & fiction + 25 "doing research" aka clicking on the research button) to 30 points (10 research + 20 fact & fiction).

yeah, I had a system with the fact or fiction:

I realized if I just marked fact every time without even doing anything, I should get 50% of the points with no effort. Do that every day, over the month, you should get close to 300 pts a month without any effort. what's the deal with them killing the search points?

I never get why people "tag" threads. What does it do, besides put a dot next to it. If you really like the thread why don't you just save it in your favorites on your computer??

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to be smart I just don't understand. You could have a whole folder on your favorite list dedicated to just TLS. And then I think about all the thread you post on normally, are you going to read everyone because you don't know what it's about. I would think the title itself would make you want to read it, not just a dot.

But sorry if I offended you with my question.

Did anyone learn anything new after this last semester??

Also E&Es are Examples and Explanations. You can get them at most school bookstores or on amazon.com

I definitely plan on getting commercial outlines or E&Es for my first year classes, but I'm not sure which ones to buy. Which ones do you recommend for each subject?
