Visitors during the school year?

Post by lavidaroka » Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:45 pm

Hi,
I will be a 1L this fall and my mom suggested visiting me the last week of September from Friday-Sunday or Monday. I am concerned that I will not be able to finish up my assignments if she visits me for a few days during the semester (I want to be able to give her my full attention, not work on homework while she is here)

I would like some advice from current/former law students on their experiences with having visitors during the semester...is it able to work or will my weekends pretty much be devoted to my studies the majority of the semester?

I have already been given a guilt trip from my mom and a call from my grandma...and I don't want to give in to the guilt just because they are family...after all, they aern't the ones going into law school debt or responsible for my grade/rankings!!!

Thanks!!

I can see it adding a bit of stress.

(also a rising 1L)

From what I have gathered, there doesn't seem to be much 'homework' in law school, in the undergrad sense of having assignments to turn in regularly. There's regular reading and note-taking/outlining to keep up with, and perhaps a few writing assignments like memos.

I'd ask the current students at your school whether the work load in late September would allow you to host a visitor for a weekend. If there's no big writing assignment due, and if you can shift your reading around to prepare for Monday's class before your mom gets there or read for a few hours while she's there, it seems like a visitor wouldn't be disastrous.

Only lwr has assignments. Just pick a weekend without it. Then do all your reading for mon and tues before she comes.

Law school is less than a 9-5 during sept and Oct.

This is TCR. I worked during the day and went to class and note and was able to devote at least 2 weekends per semester to family/friends/outside life. (And still managed to score quite well on exams.)

Don't let law school eat away at your entire social life. You'll lose your sanity very quickly.

Why is someone who hasn't spent a day in law school giving advice here?

Also, the term "rising 1L" is obnoxious.

There is no reason Mom can't visit you during September. You won't be doing a TON until mid-October. Even then, if you plan well, it won't be an issue.

2L here. You're fine. You will definitely have enough free time until middle of October at least. Start outlining in November, and you should be golden.

I blocked off November and December during 1L. I think it was a good choice.

You'll be fine. I'm sure at some point over the course of an entire weekend you can find a couple hours to do any reading you need to do anyway. Law school is not an around the clock gig in September.

It will be no problem at all. You'll just be busy the weekend before your lwr memo is due and then you'll buckle down in November for finals. Sept & oct otherwise were pretty fun and stress free.

I mean, I had visitors for weeks at a time during 1L. I survived (with honors). Sh*t doesn't hit the fan until November.

First of all, this.

Second of all, you'll absolutely have time for visitors. If you don't, you're doing law school wrong. Don't have people come right before finals and it'll be fine. In fact, it's nice to spend time with non-law school people and eat out at nice restaurants for a weekend.

Do people do a lot of work/studying during Thanksgiving break?

FWIW Rinkrat's advice in this thread was better than the 3l that responded first

But really most people sat around thinking about working while actually just relaxing.

Visitors are totally fine except for times when lwr is due and exam time.

The answer depends on if you want them to visit or not.

I had my outlines done by the day before Thanksgiving, took 2 days off for the holidays, then studied. My first exam was December 1st. Everyone does it differently though. I have some friends that didn't go home for Thanksgiving and stayed at school and studied. That seemed kind of depressing to me.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
