Summer Funding Ideas?

Postby calilaw » Fri May 18, 2012 2:28 am

I'm working for a nonprofit this summer without pay, and my attempts to pick up a paid RA position didn't pan out. My school doesn't offer summer funding/doesn't offer summer classes to tap into financial aid. I've saved enough money to cover my rent until fall, but I'd like to be able to eat as well - as a matter of personal preference.

Does anyone have any interesting ideas for earning additional income over the summer, which will accommodate a 40 hr/wk position? I don't really need a job, just some supplemental income. Tutoring? maybe find some gullible 0Ls and sell my 1L wisdom for $10/hr?

Sell your eggs/sperm
Sell your blood
Sell your hair
Hell, sell your body

Seriously, have you never had a part-time job before?
Deliver pizza of Chinese food
Become a Starbucks barrista
Work in a bookstore
Work in fast food
I could go on, but you get the point

Tutor them in what? The LSAT? Civ pro? I agree with one of the posters above...just take whatever you can get.

If you are in an area where you have contacts, try to baby-sit. Depending on how many people you know, you could get a lot of business. You also wouldn't have payroll or taxes to deal with.

Talk to your other professors. Talk to other professors in general. It's possible that some may still have some RA positions available.

Good luck!

One of my classmates just started babysitting and she is making a killing (literally, she is making more money than some people with midlaw SA's). I would try that if you're up for it. The liability sorta freaks me out though haha

I believe some gradplus loans can cover the summer even if out of class since it is basicly an internship (even if not for credit) have you explored that option with lenders and/or your schools finaid office?

If you don't want to have to pay it back, some states let students get on foodstamps. That would cover food. I have known people who have done it.

She's babysitting 5 days a week, at 5-6 hours per day. Said she is bringing in 2 grand a month easy considering its all in cash. Kinda hates her life though. :)
