2012 computer hunt

Postby evilxs » Mon May 07, 2012 8:25 pm

We have a sixty something page computer thread with 50 pages of seriously out-dated recommendations. Time to move forward.

I need a new computer. The last one met an unfortunate ending :(

I am looking for an ultrabook.
12-14" range
4 pounds or less without an extra battery
slice battery add on preferred
6 Gig ram

$1700 budget for computer and battery, chargers, etc. Docking station option would be nice.
I really like the rubberized bottom found on the bottom of beats edition computers.

My last computer was the ideal size at 8 inches wide and 12 or so long.

Thoughts?

Anyone bought a computer in the 6 months months and absolutely love it! Hate it?

It's not outdated. People are constantly posting there. Just post your question there.

Page 50 of that thread is from last summer. I did waste 30 minutes reading through old stuff and have no interest in any of those out dated models.

This thread makes a lot more sense.

Most of the recent posts there are some arguing over lenovos. They can go back and forth all day long, it is not really helping anyone else.

Unless you are doing something other than websurfin', watching videos, word processing, etc etc then this should work. Upgrade the RAM to 8gb for cheap if you want too but it's prob not necessary.

If you want the slice battery you probably want the x220 from Lenovo. It weighs ~3 pounds and with the slice battery get around 18 hours of battery life. You can also get a tablet form of the x220 that lets you write on the screen and it will translate your chicken scratch into normal writing.

select the X series

X220 is great, if you are not a Mac person.
You can also add a slice battery and a dock.

But you should wait until Thanksgiving, because ABA gives special Lenovo discounts during that time.
I got my X220 last Thanksgiving for less than $700 (after ABA discounts).

Unless you are gaming on your laptop, there is no reason to spend more than $600 for a laptop.

You can surf the net, stream, watch movies, and multitask on modern $400 computers. 8gb of ram is way overkill unless you are gaming or doing graphic design. 4gb is more than enough.

I am running resource heavy accounting programs and doing a lot of database and excel work. With really large databases you start seeing a difference in ram. My current computer had 16GB, and I know I don't need that much. I need a minimum of 6.

I can't wait until November, I cracked my computer screen. I also want to spend more money. I don't want something cheap and crappy. I abuse the crap out of my computer. If it falls down the stairs I want it to still work. I have loved elitebooks for that. They take a beating and keep ticking.

If I go with a tablet it would be the 2740p again. I had one before my current workstation and loved it. I just don't see any more current tablets out and don't want to buy a brand new computer that has been out for a year.

Checking out the links, thanks for the help.

I'm about to buy my 1L laptop. Dead set on PC. Was about to get a T420s but then I saw that Lenovo no longer sells them on their site. Rather they sell the T430s.

http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/lapto ... ies/t430s/

However, they changed the keyboard which is disconcerting, seeing as how the keyboard on the old ThinkPad was the main reason to get that model. dat 100WPM --> torts pwnage.

thoughts/experience with new T430s model? Stick with 420?

The most RAM a PC can utilize is 8 gigs, and that's only in 64 bit machines running 64bit Operating system. Anything short of that is a complete waste of money because 32 bit machiness/OS's can only process up to 3 gigs of ram.

I am a Lenovo certified IS Engineer by trade and have been using the same ole T60 w/ 2 gigs of RAM since 1L and will continue to use it till I graduate. I know we as law students spare no expense when it comes to the tools-of-our-trade, however overkill is overkill no matter how you slice it.
