Do 2nd semester 1L's really improve a lot? Forum

All of my exams this semester are open book, so my guess is that everyone is going to spot the major issues and know the rules, and grades will depend on the sophistication of analysis. I got median-pwned last semester, but I feel like I took a much different approach this semester, and can do better than I did last time. But my fear is, hasn't everyone else learned their lessons as well? My question is, how do i outrun my classmates from the axe murderer in the woods?

2L at Top 30. I went from top 25%ish to top 5% 1L Fall to 1L Spring.

1st semester, B+, B+, A-, 2nd Semester A, A, A-, A-

I got better grades second semester despite the fact that I felt really burned out and didn't feel like I worked as hard. I don't think there's any quantifiable difference. Just give it what you can and enjoy your summer.

The difference between first and second semester for me was .4 GPA points. So some people had to do worse. I'd bet the quality of exams is better in the aggregate though.

Sadly if this person is at a TTTT, TTT, or maybe even a TT then maintaining that 4.0 may be their only ticket out of the jobless hellhole that they chose to study law at.

The curve doesn't change at all. While you'd expect that people would improve, the smart get cocky and lazy, some of the middle and bottom give up, and many well meaning students who genuinely work harder take the wrong message from their first semester grades and use that extra effort unproductively.

I'm not saying you can't improve, but if the median grade in first semester was 60-70 points scored on an open book exam, the median second semester will be about the same.

I'm guessing part of the reason could be that some 1L subjects can be vastly different from others. Like Property and Crim Law?

Who cares? Worrying about how everyone else will do won't affect your grades whatsoever. You are the only one in control of that. Just concentrate on what's coming up, do your best, and the rest will take care of itself. Don't fall into the trap of "Am I doing enough?" Only you can know the answer to that.
