Public service announcement: the deadline to contribute to your 2011 Roth IRA is April 17th (thank you Patriot's day!).

Another way law school fucks you is by depriving you 3 years of lost income which you could have used to contribute to your Roth. Suppose instead of going to law school you worked a jobbaroo and contributed 5k each year for 3 years. After 40 years and an extremely conservative annual compounding rate of 5 %, you would have ~ $105,600.00 in the piggy bank which you could withdraw TAX FREE. But hey, it all evens out when you factor in the PresTTTige of the J.D.!

But you CAN contribute money from your scholarships and your summer earnings to your Roth. With little strain, you can still contribute the $5,000 annual maximum if you earn $20-32K in a biglaw summer. Law schools should not factor into financial aid eligibility summer earnings contributed to your IRA. Several top schools do not factor summer earnings into financial aid anyways.
