Question for those with PHDs in the humanities

Is it necessary to stay close to the university you did your coursework at while completing your thesis?

Each school is different, but generally no. Once you're ABD you don't have to be on campus unless you're fulfilling teaching responsibilities (if you have them).

I know a few people who live on the West Coast while writing their dissertation from a school that's on the East Coast.
