Disability accommodations handwriting/computer use on exams

Postby victortsoi » Wed Feb 29, 2012 11:54 pm

So in short, I have a pretty severe hand injury which has rendered my fine motor skills (I.e., handwriting) severely compromised. This has been documented from birth. Throughout high school and college, I have been accommodated via use of a computer for exams, never extra time though.

Will i have to register this with my lawschool ? Are there still handwritten exams?

I am honestly worried about being stigmatized for being the only kid with a laptop come exam time. Is there a way to avoid this?

You'd be more likely to be stigmatized for hand writing. The only people who handwrote exams at my school were the ones who were forced to because their computers broke during the exam

I think most, if not all schools allow laptops. Definitely talk to your school about making sure you are allowed to use a computer, even if it banned in class (which might happen for class, but I've never heard of no computer for exams).

I'd ask about extra time if your typing skills are degraded. If you are typing below 20 wpm, you are probably at a disadvantage.
