The buyer sent me a message 1 week after they placed the order, and on a Monday following a 3 day weekend asking when they would receive the book. Has this ever happend to anyone? It seems suspicious.

Yes this has happened to me and is why I always buy delivery confirmation regardless of how cheap the item is. I also have had an item lost in the mail. If this is a legit claim by the buyer, you should receive a letter from USPS saying that they found a torn up package in their warehouse. Usually the ink on the package isn't going to be lost so they should have your address even if the item got messed up/lost. Also, even if you didn't use delivery confirmation, there might be a way for USPS or UPS to confirm delivery.

Delivery confirmation man.

I can one up you. I sent a book (a brand new $100+ book) and it came out of the package in transit and was delivered with a note from the USPS that the contents came out. I was PISSED.

At least you got a note and knew it wasn't a scammer saying they never got it. I once sent a gift card in the mail w/o delivery confirmation and I swear the person knew they could get a freebee out of it when they saw that it didn't have delivery confirmation. You have to be as safe as you can when you're the seller because both Amazon and eBay favor buyers when it comes to their policies.
