Where?

I know a firm here in Dallas (Baker Botts? Baker McKenzie? It starts with a "B") has a couple 1L summer slots that also mean a guaranteed 2L SA position.

You have a 4.1 gpa. Firms did not finish their 1L hiring yet. It's obviously tough to get a SA as a 1L, but you have the grades. You could be like #1 in your class. I would get on the mass mailing ASAP.

I have a 4.0 from the same range of schools so I am also interested in what people have to say. Right now I am preparing cover letters to send to some top firms (Kirkland, Quinn Emanuel, Orrick, Dechert, K&L Gates, Nixon...) and also some judges in case someone is still looking. Is it too bold to apply to these top firms as a 1L? I am looking at the SF Bay Area and LA markets but prefer Bay Area (SF and Silicon Valley).

Definitely not too bold. I applied to many of these places on 12/1 with no grades. The worst they can say is no. Many of them do. But if it isn't already too late, your numbers are likely to generate some interest. Maybe not from top of the line firms, but at least someone who pays. 1L firm hiring is highly unpredictable, and I've found it's best to have no expectations. Still, if you have some free time before the semester starts up, it can't hurt to shoot some apps around and milk that 4.0 for all it's worth. You'd be a fool not to. Also, congrats on killing it first semester!

Do these firms take 1Ls? If so, no its not too bold. If no, then yes.

Fortune favours the bold. The worst that can happen is they say no, in which case you have lost nothing.
