Pear, I love Dropbox for transmitting large audio files (AIFF format) to clients; I just share folders. Much easier than bouncing to an ftp site and so far, very secure.

I use elephant drive. Unlimited storage for 5 computers for $90/year. I have 4 TB stored and my entire family can use my account.

For those of you looking for an automatic backup using Dropbox and OS X, check this out:
http://www.pxc.me.uk/misc/dropbox_mac_use.html

I have my law school folder symbolically linked to my Dropbox folder and whenever I hit "save" in Word I can actually watch the Dropbox icon update and show that it is uploading to the server. It is pretty awesome to have your notes available from your phone, your laptop, or your web browser.

Windows users: I'd assume there is something similar just google using some terms from the link.

It doesn't already automatically backup?

FYI, Mozy online backup is free for 2 gigs and will automatically back up any folders you tell it to as often as every 2 hours. It also stores old copies of stuff some months back. I have it automatically backup my entire documents folder, and the most I will ever lose is 2 hours worth of work if something were to happen.
Dropbox is free for 2 gigs and automatically updates the dropbox folder and every folder inside it the minute you save it / put anything in it / etc.

Yeah it does, but if, for example, you have all of your law school things saved somewhere other than your Droxbox folder - that link will allow you to set up an automatic backup between your law school documents folder and Dropbox.

Illustration:
I have Dropbox so I can trade music with friends and stuff. After the semester had begun and after I had already started a Law School folder in my home directory, I wanted to backup with Dropbox. I used the above link to create a symbolic link from my home-directory-law-school-folder to my dropbox folder so now whenever I save something to my law school folder it saves to Dropbox and thus online.

I know I'm overly complicating this but I got studying to do and don't really need to spend time explaining this to someone who it probably doesn't apply to. No offense, but you don't seem to have a good grasp on computers and it could be semi-technical thing to a lay person (I'm assuming all this since you had to ask if Dropbox automatically backsup on line). All it is is a symbolic link (*nix speak for a Windows "Shortcut").

You use OS X the way it is supposed to be used. Congrats.

On another note since you're a techy, Cron(Scheduler, or w/e Windows uses) + Shell Scripting + Dropbox is very powerful for keeping logs. I just wish we could do permissions for folders/files.

Or, use time machine like a sane person to backup your whole system. It'll back up the local copy of the Dropbox at the same time. Get a nice cheap network hard drive and it's even wireless. Dropbox does keep some recent versions as well but I have no idea for how long.

I don't understand why lawnerd couldn't just move the law folder he had into his dropbox folder in the first place. But I do like how condescending and mean he was during the explanation. Very aspie and law school of him.

I'm all for NAS solutions, but it's more of a "sledgehammer to a scalpel" situation at that point where everything gets backed up. That hard drive is also prone to failure, as well.

He's just making a linked folder which is nifty since the rest of the Dropbox file tree is left unmolested.

I essentially get triple backups though. My laptop, dropbox, and NAS drive would all need to fail. I'm protected against accidental modifications/deletions both by dropbox's versioning and the NAS. Everything should be backed up anyhow...not just the user dir. I can completely reload in under 20 minutes. You want to rebuild everything when it shits the bed during finals week? Not to mention time machines incremental backups are sweet...

Also, my NAS is a lot less likely to get wiped than dropbox. About a year ago they accidentally nuked a few files from my mom's companies account (confirmed with tech support). A friend also had her password to another site compromised and they must have tried it elsewhere. She of course had it the same everywhere and they nuked her stuff (actually deleted sections and replaced with porn).

Bottom line, I have a ton of financial stuff encrypted on my harddrive (tax returns, statements ,etc) and none of it is being stored somewhere like dropbox.

Also, he's calling someone else out about not being tech savvy and he needs to download software to symbolic link a directory? `ln -s` is built right in.

Network attached storage. WD Worldbook is what I have. About $200 for 2TB. Like a time capsule but more flexible. Mine runs as a ssh server, ftp server, etc as well as an itunes media server. I can even offload torrents to it when I power down. Plus, I can plug external hard drives into the back of it and get wireless access to them as well.

Jesus fuck. You people make the goddamn CIA look like a bunch of slackers when it comes to backing up stuff.

I really don't need my lolcat pictures and Jenna Jameson movie collection that protected.

Runnin files straight from the Dropbox folder works perfectly for me. And it's free. And I have a ridiculous amount of storage because people are super awesome about clicking my sign-up referral link which is on here somewhere. 3 more more referrals and Jenna will be safely protected in the cloud.

But you guys are bugfuck nuts about this.

Well, in my case.. it's not even an extra 2 seconds of every reboot on my PC. Took 10 minutes to set up. It's simple encryption.

For something a bit more CIA-ness, look at:
http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden ... ing-system
and..
http://www.truecrypt.org/hiddenvolume

Which allows for:

http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=plausible-deniability

Although any TrueCrypt volume allows for it.

Yeah I reckon I owe an apology to ph14 for being condescending - sorry about that. I can be an anonymous prick sometimes when I have a lot on my plate and I'm consciously wasting time on the internet.

Blowhard- I didn't download anything. I retrieved that link from an email I sent to a friend in August regarding this exact same topic. I also manually add revision numbers before I begin revising documents (usually) so incremental backups aren't that important to me and dropbox is perfectly sufficient.
ResolutePear- what kind of logs are you referring to? I haven't thought about cron in literally years. Not since I ran mirror for a particular linux distro and used it to grab the latest -current every night. Flashback.
Kronk- because I like having folders where I want them? I dunno. For some reason I wasn't fond of saving my law school work in a dropbox folder. I mentally associate dropbox with piracy.

And christ some of you are backup zealots. I have my work backed up but not much else of value on this machine. Sure, I have 600gb of music, but that's partially backed up so it wouldn't be too much of a loss if my hard drive crapped out (which has been on my mind - I installed a new HD this summer and I'm within the 3-6month window when they typically die). I download almost 90% legal and freely tradable music anyway so it wouldn't be hard to find and replace. I spend enough time on the computer as is. School work, music, and reddit are all replaceable within a few hours and all I really use a computer for these days. And looking at boobs because god knows 1L has severely cut back on the amount I see in real life.

To be fair, I also backup my mom's business machine through VPN to both my house and a family members. (She literally has 35 years of title searches, all of which save her huge time and money. Once she runs into an old one she did, she gets to reuse but charge for a full 70-year title search. She lost about 15% of her files in the late 90s due to bad floppy disks so I take no chances.) And I backup a few family members through VPN to my NAS as well. Saves me a ton of time when I work on their systems. Also eliminates pouring through a damaged drive to try to save someone's super important project/work/etc that they didn't properly backup and now it's an emergency at 1 AM.
