ITT we discuss bombing cold calls

Postby arvcondor » Thu Oct 13, 2011 10:10 am

Just finished up doing Raffles v. Wichelhaus, which if you haven't read it is one of those annoying 1860s cases from England's Court of Dandies. We read it last week and got backlogged, so I forgot what it was about, what the arguments were, and I was already having a super groggy, off day already. Our professor took mercy on me.

Tell stories about fucking up in class.

For me its the opposite. Ill know everything about the case but in an effort to sound intelligent, ill stay the stupidest things and make half-wit connections.

Did all the readings and understood everything thoroughly, got to class an hour early, reviewed all the material multiple times, got called on, absolute silence, professor asks an easier question to give me another chance, absolute silence again.

Silly MTal, everyone knows it takes more than 3 years to go into academia and become a professor :)

If worse comes to worse, I'll just pick up one of those easy-to-come-by, plush 6-figure jobs in retail management.

Dude, you aren't contractually obligated for shit you don't know about. This isn't fucking tort law. Idiots should have had two mill shafts.

I read this case like, a year ago.

I thought MTal's comment was pretty clever actually.

I've bombed a cold call before. It sucks and is embarrassing but you just got to make the best of it and move on.

I don't think I've ever NOT bombed a cold call. Even when I know the right answers I usually like to just answer one or two so the prof knows I read and then say "I don't know" after that so they'll move on.

If you bomb it well enough, you won't get called on again.

+1. I forgot my notes in a class that had fallen slightly behind the reading. This was around week 2, and instead of just admitting that I forgot my notes, I tried to play it off like remembered the case. Crash and burn. To make matters worse, he decided to make an example of me by calling on me repeatedly that class just to hear me fumble. I have thick skin, so it really didn't bother me all that much after the initial embarrassment. I haven't been called on since, and some people in the class are on their 4th call.

One of my profs puts 1/3 of the class on call for an entire week and just chooses 2 people at random for each case. The day I get called on, he decides he wants to discuss my case all damn class. To make it worse, my "partner" obviously didn't do the reading. I recall saying several stupid things, but it sounded awesome compared to the other person's ramblings.

I got cold-called in immigration the other day.

Prof: "Mr xxx, what happened in case bla bla bla."
Me: "I apologize, I was thinking about sports, what was the question again?"
"What kind of sports."
"Well I was thinking about basketball. NBA players on an O/P visa should have to file an affadavit of support, because they all go broke within a few years."
