Re: 1Ls How much time are you spending on homework (POLL)
The "more than 45 hours" option doesn't do 160+ hours justice.
I think for accuracy there should be 0-168 in 1 hour increments.

I do much more than 15 hours. It's not that I'm not grasping the subject matter quick but that I feel like since this is law school I should have no free time. I guess I need to stop thinking like that.NYC Law wrote:How is it even possible to spend >15 hours this early?

But I mean, what do you do? Just keep re-reading the same thing? I don't even feel like we're far enough in to start doing many practice problems since most essays involve multiple issues that are later to come.wallawhite1987 wrote:I do much more than 15 hours. I basically go through everything with a fine-tooth comb. I also have a couple supplements that I've been using even if I get the material completely. Like I said, I'm probably going to stop doing this much, because it's a unnecessary and even a little neurotic. I still think >15 hrs. is a little low, though.NYC Law wrote:But I mean, what do you do? Just keep re-reading the same thing? After the 4th week, you get a lot more work to do. Im now in my 6th week. Especially with LRW. First 3 weeks I spent maybe an hour total on LRW, now its my most time consuming class and the others haven't eased any (contracts actually picked up as did torts).NYC Law wrote:How is it even possible to spend >15 hours this early?

I spend atleast 30 hours a week and thats NOT including supplemental assignments/reading/or review.
Con Law = atleast 10 hours a week (100 pages a week + briefing + outlining).
Contracts = around 6 hours a week (60 pages...)
Torts = around 5 hours a week (50 pages...)
LRW = Atleast 10 hours a week (3 hours reading and doing basic assignments, 7 on writing/research/weekly assignments)(When the first memo was due I spent around 25 hours that week)
Im not an over acheiver or a slow reader, this stuff just takes time.

How do you manage to read and brief 300 pages and do LRW assignments in less than 30 hours? LRW assignments are brutal at my school.shoeshine wrote:>30 hrs = your doing it wrong
I think 30 hours a week is the minimal they actually expect you to work. I mean its the equivelent of a 45 hour a week job... Come on, everyone knows law school is more demanding than a normal 8-5 job.

What do you do in LWR that you spend more time in it than your two doctrinal classes? Aren't you a 1L as well?Extension_Cord wrote:After the 4th week, you get a lot more work to do. The 11 page memo with 25 cases to be reviewed was killer. You have to write it in a specific format. Its not like other writing. We are learning research now and have workbook assignments.

I do the minimum and get help from the TA in that class.
Reading and briefing should not take more than three hours per day. I have about 50-60 pages of case book reading in my non-LRW classes. That usually takes about 3 hours with briefing every case.
I outline and review on the weekend for about 2-3 hours.
I am averaging 18-22 hours of homework per week. It will probably bump up during finals but over 30 would be excessive now.

Re: 1Ls How much time are you spending on homework (POLL)
I figure I spend 1-3 hours per night during the week per class.
Monday Night 3-5
Tuesday 3-5 hours.
Wednesday 3-5.
Thursday 1-2 (unless there is a LAWR assignment due) and I'm out for law night until about 2 am at the bars with classmates.
Friday - 0 Out drinking until 2 am unless I am sick or have a good excuse.
Saturday - 1-2 (maybe during college football) Up by 7 am to tailgate. Then out at night until 2 am.
Sunday - 3-4 hours Recover, relax, do some house cleaning / laundry,
I would say about 12-15 hours a week is currently being spent on homework.
All of my outlines are up to date by pulling the BLL through one note. I don't brief. I used googled / canned briefs for socratic. Write my own synthesis of BLL from the cases and any important forks in one note for my outline. I feel like this affords me time to focus on the important stuff for the exam and not waste time notating and memorizing random stuff daily for socratic. I spend most of my time in class on TLS / zoning out when someone is being grilled on useless facts / facebook chatting with classmates. I use the recommended TLS supplements and normally I come to class feeling like I could answer nearly ever hypo if I had to write answers-- if I was the one on the hotseat I'm sure I wouldn't due to the pressure.
Torts varies in reading from 15-30 pages a week.
Contracts is normally 50 pages.
Property is supposed to be 50 pages a week but we are way behind and averaging like 25 a week "to build concepts".
