If you care -- Prof created scam blog angers other profs

Post by BackToTheOldHouse » Sun Aug 14, 2011 2:41 pm

For your reading pleasure, if you care . . .

So, an anonymous law prof started this blog a few days ago in which he basically calls law school a scam:
http://insidethelawschoolscam.blogspot.com

He has gotten some attention, most notably from Brian Leiter who is pretty sure he knows who the anon prof is:
http://leiterlawschool.typepad.com/leit ... og-is.html

Another lengthy commentary popped up over on PrawfsBlog:
http://prawfsblawg.blogs.com/prawfsblaw ... of.html#tp

Inside Higher Ed has a piece on the blog as well:
http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011 ... profession

Seems like this prof thought it would be a good idea to get in on the scam blog fun, but now that other profs have taken notice and might even out him (or maybe he's outed himself), dude might have damaged his reputation.

Mods, please move this thread if you think you need to.

Why is he trying to kill the goose which lays his golden eggs?

It seems he feels a certain amount of guilt for his role in what he thinks is a scam:

"So welcome to my nightmare. It is the nightmare of a man who woke from the pleasant dream that all was right with his wonderful little career, into a world of pain, regret, and anger -- that is, the world of so many of my students." (quoted from his first post titled, "Welcome to my nightmare")

Seems like a mischaracterization of Leiter's position (he stated that he wouldn't out the dude). I read Leiter's post more as a "listen dude, I'm pretty sure I know who you are. I'm pretty sure your colleagues know who you are. You know why? It's because you are awful at hiding your identity. Given this, don't you think you should be more careful about what you're saying?"

Yea, threatening is probably too strong a word. I'll edit my original post. I think his last sentence (of his update on 8/13) just left a sour taste in my mouth for some reason.

I had this playing in the background while I read his blog.
I think the song syncs up perfectly to his bitching & complaining.

I don't think there's really any "outing" to be done. Paul Campos of U Colorado has not made his views on this topic secret at all. Pretty sure everyone suspects that he's behind it.

Some other blogger was just positive the guy was at either Texas or Georgetown.

I would doubt very much that this is a T14.

Read through all the above referenced sources. I believe that it is specified that it is a nationally respected non-top 10 law school. Further posts speculated that it is among Texas, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin or Ohio State. The prof. claims that he has taught at four law schools.

Just a guess, but he specifically stated that it wasn't a top 10 school. However, the term T14 is used more frequently, so why didn't he just say it wasn't a top 14 school? Perhaps because he teaches at Texas which is in the T14 this year.

Whoever he is, his blog validates all my fears.

Why is he a tool? Are you an 0L?

Law school is not an education. It's a 3-year, $200K hazing ritual. You can actually try and teach yourself stuff in moot court, clinics, etc., but there's next to no teaching of legal skills going on. You never get feedback until after the class is over, and that's only if you seek it out. And even then, it's mostly the professor being vague and not giving you any specific, tangible advice. 90% of your class time is the professor grilling people to make sure they read material that's not going to be on the exam, and gunners wasting everyone's time trying to prove that they're smart when all they're really doing is reciting irrelevant drivel that they memorized (which actually happens to be a good approach to exams).

All this so your law school can give your tuition money to the French Literature department so that those students can attend for free (because no one in their right mind would pay for that program because there's zero jobs applicable to that major).

Who is the the tool? The law "anti-scam" prof? Why? If anything, he/she's saying that students are being charged too much for too little.

To me, the tools are those trying to silence him/her.

I think Leiter's a tool, but I don't have the time or energy to explain why.

T14 is only used more frequently by the younger generation. Go talk to some professors about the "T14" and they'll prob be confused about why that designation. And I think leiter has essentially leaked that it is Paul campos (at least that's what autoadmit is saying).

If it helps alleviate some of your fears, I have had a great experience with most all professors 1L year. Vast majority have a very strong interest in the subject they teach and cared a lot about the students.
