If you were being sued for all your money, would you rather hire a lawyer that was good at law school or tennis? Yeah, firms too.
A lawyer who was good at being a LAWYER.
Wow that was really insightful there guy.

Far more insightful than suggesting that, as a client, you should hire someone based on law school grades, or better yet, the assumption that you can't be good at both law school and tennis.

If you don't like the assumption that hireability=good grades, you are in for a world of hurt come OCI.

But, then, if I was as bad at reading and comprehending as you are, I'd probably tell myself my grades didn't matter also. Please, point out to me where I made "the assumption that you can't be good at both law school and tennis."

Something to consider: Are any biglaw hiring partners in NYC tennis players? If so, target those firms. I'm guessing you'll have an easy time getting a job after playing a few matches with them.

That's the schedule... I dunno, it looks pretty doable finals wise... Also practices are from 9-11 pm on weekdays

Any more thoughts?

Fuck it. Go ahead. You'll easily have 12-15 hours a week to spare for this.

Short answer is that it is a terrible idea.

Do it and never look back. You only have one shot to play a varsity sport in college.

Law school is not as much work as people will have you believe, most people are just horrible at time management. Plenty of people watch hours of tv every night. Hell, from January through April I watched 4 hours of college hoops a night.

With a little bit of discipline, you can pull it off.

Statistically, you're most likely to finish 1L year in the middle 50 percent. I'd much rather be median at NYU having a varsity letter than not. Plenty of lawyers are bros and this will help you get a job.

Imagine how bummed you'll be if you finish median and didn't play.

Do it.

Because, as we all know, you get like 8 chances to do 1L.

I can't believe all the negative responses in this topic.

OP, trust me and go for it. 1L isn't nearly as time-consuming as people make it out to be if you have good time management.

Especially when you're going to NYU. It's not even a requirement for you to graduate in the Top 10% to have a shot at a job.

thesealocust wrote:This would be an awful idea. If the sport matters that much, go find a school that will pay for a masters in basket weaving or something to use your eligibility. 1L is an extremely taxing experience that will make you feel more overwhelmed than you are, and adding an intense sport to it will be double-plus ungood.
Best advice I have seen here. You will have one shot at your 1L which is probably the most important year in law school for several reasons. First, the basic skills of legal thinking, researching and writing are taught there. It takes a LOT of time to adequately inculcate these skills into becoming inate to you, which is why the ABA doesn't allow a lot of outside work if you are taking this full time. Secondly, If you do well in your first semester, you can either transfer to a better school or get a scholarship from your current school. Bottom line: I highly suggest that you don't play varsity sports in your 1L year.

Would you be getting a scholarship for playing tennis? Yes, I know that D-3 schools don't give out athletic scholarships, but if they want someone to play a sport for their school, they will often give that person an athletic scholarship disguised as an "academic" scholarship. It could be a relatively easy, fun, and rewarding way to save on expenses.

This.

There is plenty of time 1L year to play a sport (I ran cross country/track DI undergrad, so I have an idea of the time commitment you are looking at).

It really will not be an issue as long as you are still responsible about studying (which will not be that hard to do). I know several people who have competed in sports at a high level while in first year law school and med school programs, and none of them had any issues (and still did well grade-wise).

It's just not worth it. It's not the studying tome you will be losing, but the downtime and socializing that you will not really get.

Ime, that shit is valuable and essential todoing well and not burning out

There is a difference between "can I do this successfully" and "can I do this and do as well as I would have otherwise" These boards are very clear that your 1L year is the make or break year for your career - at least for your first job. I think the question is will the benefits of playing tennis - good exercise, focus outside of school, doing something you love - outweigh the negative of the demand that you must get the highest grades possible in 1L.

I definitely do not think that playing 1L tennis will make up for bad grades. It is a great plus for interviews, but if you don't make the grades, you may not even get in the door. Do not rely on NYU's name to help you get jobs if you don't have the grades. It would be a mistake to assume that because you are in NYU that the name alone will help you get a job if you don't place high enough in your class. (I'm not saying you do assume that, but make sure you are not in the back of your head relying on NYU to get you a job. Your grades are all the really matters.)

I wonder how long we will let him defer his classes. I know he does have an interest in coming back (who would do 1L for nothing anyway?).

People who can do it for free while preparing themselves further athletically. I mean, sure there are other easier grad programs to pursue, but if thats what your interested in, why not. I think his hope is to have long enough career that when he starts law school hell be starting over again, but with preparation far beyond any other 1L. Did you graduate ND UG in 2010? your profile says one of your majors was Econ and that was one of mine as well.

Yeah I did. I didn't feel too connected to the econ major as compared to history, but I was still in the classes haha

1. My grades are fine 2. Landed firm jobs for summer (big firm in fact) 3. it's if "I were as bad" 4. I still don't like the assumption, and somehow I've managed to avoid the" world of hurt"...enjoy your bowling league.
