Freedom - internet-blocking software

Post by sgtgrumbles » Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:51 am

0L here. I'm worried that I'll be tempted during class to browse the internet, Gchat, etc. I've never used it, but I've heard about the software Freedom, which allows you to block your own internet access for pre-determined amounts of time. This seems like an effective way to nix the internet distraction problem.

Do any current students use this or a similar program to keep distractions at bay? Are there any disadvantages?

Thanks!

This actually sounds like a great idea.

StayFocusd extension for Chrome. You can define set times for it to block websites that you choose, or you can have it block everything.

Just man up and don't surf the internet in class. Or take notes by hand and leave your computer in your bag. What are you going to do when you get a real job? Explain to one of the partners that you have to install some internet-nanny software on the computer to babysit yourself so you can get your work done?

You can just disable your wireless card yourself, and then enable it again after class. If you're so distracted that you won't be able to help enabling your wireless card during class, there are probably bigger issues at play.

This. On a Mac:

1) Click on AirPort icon (upper right)
2) Click on "Turn AirPort Off"

Done. Voila, no more tubes.

I use "Leechblock" for mozilla. Once you click block you can't really unblock so even if you want to get back on you really can't. Way better than airport on/off IMO.

Go with leechblocker. There will be times you legitimately need to get on the internet that you may not anticipate--looking up a case or a word or something along those lines. Or if you get called on and are struggling you might want to be able to access gchat.

you'll start using the internet by mid-september so don't even worry about it

i mean not all the time. but you'll be able to figure out when you can and can't do it.

I'd rather shoot myself in the face than be stranded in torts without distraction.
