Top Law Schools

Has anyone either in law school or heard of anyone in law school using e-readers for most of their books?

If so, how is the availability of texts and the ease? I am considering purchasing a Nook.

If you do get an e-reader, you'll be best served by a Kindle.

You don't want to use an e-reader for your books in law school. You are going to want to be able to mark them up(a lot more than an ereader will allow) and look through them quickly in class. I don't think any of my books were available in an ebook version.

Guess markings on the screen aren't too efficient.

Using an e-reader in class would suck. I can see an iPad being useful for taking notes in class and that's about it.

Marking on e-readers and ipads from what i've seen isnt as easy as it is doing it the old-fashioned way - in the book.

I meant literally taking a permanent marker to the thing. I guess traditional ol' books would make sense...

ereaders are no good for large books that you need to search, access quickly, or mark-up. That said, I haven't seen any of my law books available for purchase in eformat.

What I do is this:

I take all my books to Kinko's, have them cut the binding, and then use a duplexing scanner to email them to myself as a pdf document. I have a tablet pc, so that allows me to easily mark up and search each document. The best part is, you can buy a cheap highlighted copy of the books because the scanner doesn't pick up the highlighting.

Every semester. Takes about 15 mins to scan 400 hundred or so pages. The auto document feeder on the industrial copiers that most schools have makes it pretty easy to do. Just put the stack of papers in and walk away.

I also took my books to FedEx Office (formerly Kinko's) and have the bindings cut. Then I create little booklets out of the chapters and only carry what I need.

I have a Xerox high-speed duplex scanner, but never bother to make PDFs, although it only takes a few minutes, so I might do that this semester.

This solution is much better than a Kindle. You have the physical book to mark up, plus a searchable PDF file.

When is Ken going to make a Top-Law-Schools app for my iPad?

Ipad's are nice and so are more traditional e-readers. However, I would not want to read a casebook on any e-reader. Simply put, e-readers are wonderful for reading novels, but we really use our casebooks. I could not imagine book briefing my cases on an e-reader. Perhaps this will change for future generations as e-readers improve. For now though, I would recommend you stick to the regular case books.

I think it would be nifty if they would include a free ebook with every casebook purchase.

I'd totally be behind the iPad, had it come with OSX and not iOS since that would have made this a possibility thanks to Adobe Acrobat's strong proofing tools.

My civpro book came that way. I used it a lot at the beginning of the year when I was still struggling with legal terms(I could look them up just by clicking on the word instead of flipping through Black's). I don't use it anymore, though, because I can't mark it up enough and we arent allowed to have electronic devices in that class. That is another problem OP could run into; some of his profs may not allow ereaders...then what?
