Law school = pregnancy

I had a stunning realization last night that law school is like pregnancy. For a man, this is as close as we can get. For women, I don't know why you would choose to go through it all over again and actually have a child.

Pre law school is all fun and games: getting knocked up (or daydreaming about how wonderful it will be to be a lawyer), picking out a name like Harvard or Stanford, and wondering why you can't name your kid Princeton (fucking retarded name, for a child anyway). You practice exercises, pack an overnight bag, and generally worry about what the experience will be like.

1L is when your water breaks and you have an "oh shit this is for real moment." Everyone seems so nice at the school, but there is a lot of tension as you get settled in for the long haul. It is "the most intense thing you have done to date," and it feels like torture.

2L is the hard work, very painful, and with a lot of pushing. You can see the finish line, but there is a shit load of work between it and you. At least you have friends whose hands you can squeeze to get you through. The closest thing to an epidural you will get is copious amounts of liquor and sleeping in. Hopefully it won't have an effect. You also end up asking yourself "why did I do this, and who said it was a good idea?" Nevermind, you grit your teeth and go on because well...you can't exactly go backwards. See, it is only beneficial to abort during the first year, and you're well beyond that.

3L seems to be like the moment just after birth where you are more relaxed, but haven't been discharged yet, and you're hoping it is a nice day outside after all of that work. It is still painful, and you are stitching yourself back together so you can rejoin the rest of society. You've got a bit of a smile on your face, because you've done something that others have not, and you lived to tell the tale. You can enjoy the fruits of your labors, but you hope the baby (or in this case your degree) wasn't a bad choice. Or retarded. You're probably a bit concerned at this point, because you wonder if you will be good enough.

Taking the bar is like getting a mostly clean bill of health from the doctor. Things are mostly fine, you'll need regular checkups, and you're good enough. But, looking back, there were things you could have done better. It doesn't matter now anyway, because you've got your child...err...degree. And no one can take that away from you, except the state. At this point, you've incurred significant financial damage just to get to where you are, so you have to start cutting corners just to make ends meet.

Like I said, I'm not sure why women who go to law school go through it all over again, but at least it's good prep for us guys.

That's all I've got. Back to this stupid take home exam.

Interesting, but I thought everything after 1st semester was pretty easy.

It does get easier, but that's because you've learned how to do the work. On the flipside, the work load increases, you're tripping out about finding a job, networking, etc. Overall, life is worse 2L than it is as a 1L.

Having been through both pregnancy and the first semester of 1L I can officially tell you that law school is both more painful and less rewarding than pregnancy and delivery!

:| I've been through pregnancy/delivery twice and the first semester of 1L and... law school is a lot easier than having two kids. (Then again, I really wasn't a fan of the whole delivery thing...)

I have one kid, who was enormous, and another on the way. Law school is infinitely worse than childbirth, mostly because there is no such thing as an epidural for law school, and my law school degree isn't adorable. I also can't put it on the holiday cards.

 but what an awesome idea - take the kids, make them stand in front of school, send the pic on a card as "My 3 children"
(And congrats on #2 - when are you due?)

+10,000,000 because even a 52 hour labor (like mine!) is shorter than the months of 1L first semester!

May 15th. Here's hoping the kiddo doesn't come early (read: in the middle of spring semester exams). :)

You took a break from a take home exam to write this? You need a pen pal.
