I'm still sitting on 2/3 grades and I'm absolutely petrified to receive the third. The stress level has actually gone up.

In addition, I'm so scared about Spring term. I'm totally confident that I will mess it all up. Like "wait, how did I do that???" I know what I did last term that seemed to work but for some reason I feel like I'm going to fail now. Neurotic mess or is anyone feeling the same?

This American Life had an interesting piece on payday lending recently. One point I hadn't thought of is that the interest they assess is actually small compared to alternatives the average payday client has that aren't specifically billed as interest. For example, to borrow $100 for 5 days you might have to pay back $105. However, if you wrote a bad check for $100 the fee the bank charges could be $35.

I completely understand. I am terrified to see my last grade, and I feel like there's now so much more pressure to do well this semester. I never thought my grades would be this good, so now I feel like I've set the bar way too high for myself and that there's no way I'll ever match it again. So yeah, yay for being a neurotic mess...I suppose that's one thing I'll always be good at.

They had an interesting piece on payday lending maybe something like a year ago. I thought it was shocking the number of people who took out payday loans habitually for non-emergency situations, who are the type of people I was thinking of. MrKappus is a little sensitive about this topic for whatever reason - I can only imagine why.

Just imagine what a mess you'd be with 0/3, with 2/3 of them already late, and the 3rd having about a 99% chance of being significantly late. I have no clue how effective I was last semester and yeah, this semester feels like a whole new ball game. By the way, a 2L at CLS warned me that February is 1L depression time. Apparently even those with great grades from last semester found themselves feeling awful by mid Feb. Something to look forward to...

They are what credit cards are to medium income folk. You borrow money, get interest on it, if you don't pay it on time you get hit with a high fee. It just happens faster (you have to pay the whole thing back in a few weeks as opposed to paying a small fraction like w/ credit cards). The way states have tried to fix the problem actually has made it worse in a lot of ways. One state outlawed "payday lenders" and guess who didn't go out of business...the payday lenders. They just changed the type of loan they gave (call it a consumer loan) and in order to keep that classification and not be labeled a "payday" loan (which is illegal) the companies have to charge daily interest from the origination of the loan. This means the consumer is actually paying MORE money to get the same amount of money. The company eliminates late fees but replaces it with an "origination" fee. So, really the changed law was an empty political gesture devoid of any real impact except for making the payday loan companies MORE money.

In the end poor, irresponsible people will find a way to be poor and irresponsible with their money regardless of regulation. The government should do what it can to maximize consumer choice and let the consumers do what they want with their money.

That may have been slightly off topic so let me supplement that with....

WHERE ARE MY GRADES?!?!?!

That's what got me depressed last year. My grades were terrific, and the firms at the top of my list didn't seem to care. I also found last semester to be miserable because of 2L OCI. On the other hand, fall of 1L and this current semester have been the most enjoyable academic experiences of my life. The market is just brutal, and it really caused me a lot of anxiety.

Same here. My classes feel harder and the concepts are much more opaque. I haven't got the slightest clue how my con law professor could possibly begin to test us on what we're "learning."

I agree. Even with offers in hand already, 2L Fall is miserable because of OCI/job hunt. I couldn't relax until it was completely over, and I had decided where I was ending up. Even after that, I was far behind in classes, but too exhausted to catch up.

That's what happened to me as well. I got behind in my classes because I was flying in and out of town every other weekend, plus missing classes when my on-campus interviews conflicted with my class schedule. Follow that up with dozens and dozens of rejection letters, and I just didn't have the spirit to catch back up in my classes. Even though I accepted two offers, I didn't feel relieved until my last final was over.

I have to admit if I got a lousy grade in torts and I had to take some of the PI jobs I've been looking at... I'd be pretty depressed too even though I'd still be "above median".

Seriously some of these jobs sounds like I'll be doing high school intern work for an organization tangentially related to the legal profession. "Preparing media promoting the organization"? Seriously?

A lot of the other stuff on Symplicity is bait and switch job descriptions, with broad descriptions of their work and departments but you dig in 6 pages and find out they only have spots open in their HR department. I'm kinda gettin despressed just thinking about spending my 1L summer doing powerpoints on how some PI group can use Twitter to get their message out!

There is no such range, but at Duke it's still technically on schedule. Grades were due the 25th and we got an email saying no latter than early next week. Grades came on Friday last year and only rumors suggested Friday this year.

DNCG is subtle C trolling, not so subtle Gtown trolling, and very subtle MV trolling.

Employment-wise the bottom of the top is currently CMBG.

It's okay. Maybe next year Duke will manage to hit the 50% mark in NLJ50 hiring - the fact that they send almost nobody into gov't/PI should help them out.
