I remember it too, not because I actually saw it, but because they did a story about it on This American Life: http://audio.thisamericanlife.org/jomam ... se/412.mp3
The story starts at 38:10

Here's a video of the incident:

Do most of you guys have forced curves at your school? Our school has a mandatory mean in each class (86.5-87.5) but no forced curve. Some profs give out 100s, while some profs give out 95s as the best grade. Obviously, this means profs who give out 100s and high 90s have to give out more really bad grades to the bottom of the class, and profs who have a tighter mean will have fewer scores in the low 70s. This just seems to hurt people in the top half, while not really helping people at the bottom (because once you get down that low grades-wise, you 're not getting a job based off of grades anyway).

Sorry for the rant... this just really screws me because my property prof doesn't give out high 90s or 100s, while another property prof gave out 4 100s. If my prof used this kind of scale, I'd be about 12-15%iles higher be sitting in good shape for law review. Curious to hear if this is common and I should stop whining.

This is assuming, of course, that you would have merited a 100.

That really sucks, but I think almost every school has that dilemma. Sorry to hear it.

I didn't say I would have gotten one. I'm just saying that overlaying that prof's scale onto ours would drastically help me (and many of my peers in my section).

I guess I am just being overly-whiney. It just sucks when you hear through the grapevine that people in other sections are getting GPAs that aren't even mathematically possible in my section.

I've been thinking more about doing an RA position if possible, even though career services told me not to. How'd you land it?

Why would career services tell you not to do an RA? They must really hate you...

They asked me what I wanted to do with a JD and I said 'get a job.' They asked me to be more specific and I said 'one that pays money.' So they told me being an RA would be a bad idea because I wouldn't get enough variety of experience to figure out my future or something.

As per usually, career services offices everywhere continue to shell out poor advice.

I have found our CSO to be pretty solid so far, although I haven't really spoken much to their counselors and guidance staff. But our dean is on the ball.

Yeah that is just dumb on their part. The credited response is "well firm positions for 1L's are scarce, but you should still try to apply to any that you're interested in. Also, look into XYZ externship programs for the summer, and RA'ing is always a good idea. The most important thing this summer is for you to get some sort of legal experience down on your resume."
