Re: 1L grade waiting thread
I don't mean to suggest that I would actually bid that way. I'm asking whether the grades are good enough that I should be able to get a job at top tier firms.

That's insane! I only have half of mine!! Last semester I didn't get my last grade until mid-Feb!
it sucks because I can't put a bid list together until I know what my grades are. They have been good so far, but what if I got a B- or a C for some reason? I would be a game-changer.

Re: 1L grade waiting thread
i've never heard of anyone estimating incorrectly by more than a grad, or even a half grade. One friend got a B+ instead of an A but he kinda knew the A was over optimistic.

Oh definitely, only a tiny number of firms in the country will be hard for you based on grades. You're in great shape, and have strong odds at every firm in the country that isn't a prestige obsessed 200 or fewer lawyer litigation boutique.of Benito Cereno wrote:I don't mean to suggest that I would actually bid that way. I still hesitate to tell anybody that they "should" be able to get x/y/z out of OCI though - there's just so much chaos involved in the process, and so much more to it than GPA. It's good to think of it that GPA can take you out of the running, but can rarely get you a job on its own. That's overstating it a tad, but approaching it with that attitude is the healthiest thing you can do for yourself over the next few months.

I get grades in a week. Holy shit, getting freaked out all over again. I finished top 25% after, what I would call, a pretty massive exam fuck up last semester in 2 classes... so I keep thinking there's got to be no way I can do worse. I just want to get this over with, ughhhh.

Chill out. You already took the exams and presumably did your best. There's nothing you can do about it now. Being worried isn't helping you. Just chill bro.beach_terror wrote:I get grades in a week. 1.5 weeks here. walking out of exams i felt i did at least as well as i did last semester, and probably better. hearing all these stories of people whose grades plummeted is eating away at my calm, though. wuuuusaaaaaa. wuuuussssaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I'd say scrap whatever you just said and if you don't have the numbers to get a job from OCI that over the summer you should work on your looks.. then bid on firms that are known for hiring attractive people.. thats my plan at leastLawquacious wrote:Desert Fox wrote:No matter how terrible your grades are, you should do OCI.MSPeast wrote:Still gradeless for two more weeks! I wish I had them now so I knew whether to even bother with OCI already.
I've kind of been wondering this myself re: OCI given my drop in GPA... whether it is worth sending out all the apps to firms at on-campus and off-campus OCI... It looks like after this semester I may not end up being top 25% due to a substantial GPA drop from first to second semester. I go to a lower T1.
The school is involved in a number of job fairs (a network member for several off-campus OCI locations, and we also have on-campus OCI), but at least with firms I think prob. around top 20% is necessary to have a shot. Not positive though. If any thing I guess this probably means I will need to be a lot more agressive in my job search. I have thought about emailing Career Services to try to get realistic cut-offs for when it is worthwhile, but I think getting a non-rosy estimate (i.e. 'everyone has a shot') may not happen.
OTOH, I do get the impression that firms will look fairly far past grades for really strong work experience, as I know a 1L who got a rare firm job, and I think what did the trick was work as a biz. administrator (I suspect his grades really weren't very strong, but could be totally wrong). In my case I have some good work experience, but also have a choppy resume and little or no "business" experience, which I think firms are often most interested in (aside from actual legal field experience of course).

But it's not law school if it's not inducing, or getting close to inducing, a panic attack. But seriously, point taken.. the wait is just god awful.rad law wrote:Chill out. I'm still waiting on Con Law. I see anything from a B to an A. And the school has given no reason for the wait.

Academic Recognition
James Kent Scholars
Established in 1923 by the Faculty of Law, in memory of James Kent who, in 1793, became the first Professor of Law at Columbia College, and was an inspiration for the establishment of legal education at Columbia. Awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement by students in each of the three classes.
A student shall be named a Kent scholar if during an academic year the student has earned at least 15 graded law credits toward his or her degree, and in that year either 1) has achieved a grade point average of 3.800, or 2) has received grades all or all but one of which are A+, A or A- (the exception being no lower than B), and, if the lowest grade is put aside, at least half of which are A or A+. Only law credits are used to calculate honors. No one will receive honors for a year which includes a grade of "Incomplete."

Anyone have like an online calculator I can estimate my class rank with? We don't rank, but I sort of know the median, and the 20th%tile grades cutoff is released. I need to know where I can sorta bid.

I'm sorry, its been five weeks. Your exam was word limited. It is my last grade. Whether or not I have a future might depend on this grade. And you're going to be in Europe half this month. Please, please, dear god please give me my grade.

You can use linear interpolation, but there's no guarantee as to the accuracy because the curve may or may not be linearly distributed (and it probably isn't)rad law wrote:Anyone have like an online calculator I can estimate my class rank with? It doesn't matter where you are, but where firms perceive you. Look at GPA sheets from last OCI.rad law wrote:Anyone have like an online calculator I can estimate my class rank with?
