DF just called me: a C- in con law. At NU. We're gonna go get wasted, but he'll be looking for advice on how to deal with this at OCI. His GPA will take a shot, but he will still have decent grades. PM him ideas or post them here.

Thanks! I was shocked to see con law turned in first. It was the last exam we took.

Lots of people dropping a bit. Ill change the tone....

1st semester: ~top 33%

2nd semester:
Ks II: A-
Con Law: B+
Property: B (very happy with this as I was in the bottom of the class after the midterm)
Civ Pro II: A
LRW: A-

After 2nd semester: ~top 25%

(school curves to a B)

Very happy with the improvement. Time to celebrate.

You'll be close. Median at my school is 3.1-3.15ish and 3.6 is typically the ballpark for the top 10% cut off.

yeah it will be pretty close, median for us is between 3.2-3.3 and 3.75ish is right around 10%.

Could someone please explain how the GPA cutoffs for 1Ls are different than the cutoffs on NALP for the graduating class? For example, let's say top 25% for the graduating class was a 3.6, would the GPA for top 25% for 1Ls be lower since we haven't taken a bunch of seminars and A-B curved classes?

All my grades are finally in... sigh At least my semester average is above a 3.0? :( Certainly not that impressive though for a T30. And at least my grades are somewhat consistent...

LOL hell no, there's no way I kept it. I have to stay in top third and we curve to a 3.3. PM advice on how/where to get loans for next year?

I think you already have the right idea to some extent. First of all, if there are more A/B seminar classes (50/50 type curve) given to 1Ls than to upperclassmen at a school then that could tend to make the top 25% after 1L a higher number than after 3L. [I think at many schools it happens to be the other way around though, but am not positive].

Another explanation is that even with a set distribution ('curve'), there is some margin of error for what percentage of each class (as in each Contracts, Property etc class) is given a particular grade (i.e. 27.5%- 32.5% A range); so if top 25% for a given class (as in 1L, or 2L, or 3L classes, such as class of 2009) at a school is different after 1L compared to that same class (2009) at graduation, then it could be because the essentially random variation of the actual grade percentage amounts that fell in a particular range in the individual subject classes are slightly different each semester and each year. In other words, lets says that the class of 2009 had an A range grade awarded to students an average of 31% per class due to teacher discretion for year one, but then for years 2 and 3 it happened to be closer to 29.5% and 29.2% were actually awarded As on average in individual classes (where the ideal distribution is 30% As). If this is the case, then year-one would likely (though it also depends on what the B and sub-B ranges looked like) have a slightly higher 25% cut-off than after all three years.

Further, if the chart/numbers you are looking at compares 1L (2011) to graduating students (2011) at the same school (rather than comparing one class at one point in time to the same class at another point of time), there could be variations based on class make-up (size particularly) that could minutely impact the final calculation even if 'curve' ideals were followed fairly closely. But the above range factors would also come into play when comparing different classes of students (e.g. 2009 to 2011). Even within a single class compared to itself over time, the student make-up may have changed enough (drop-outs and transfers) to minutely impact final ratio calculations I think.

But all these input variables likely would only change the top 25% GPA number cut-off slightly, as long as grading policies stay consistent and there is no major difference in the the types of classes offered to 1Ls v. upperclassmen (and no intentional grade 'curve' shift from students as 1Ls to how they are graded as 2 and 3Ls).

Sometimes schools do change grading policies, so that is another factor that could have an even more substantial impact on 1L v. at graduation cut-offs. Additionally, I think it is possible some schools actually adjust their curves for 2L/3L courses v. 1L courses, though I doubt this is too common.

Hope that helps a little bit. It is only my speculation, and the terms are probably sloppy at best, but I think it does help explain, at least in part, how those numbers can be hypothetically different.

Still gradeless for two more weeks! I wish I had them now so I knew whether to even bother with OCI already.

Did the math, if I end up with As in my two 3 credit courses, and land A-s in my bigger credit courses, I'll be on teh law reviewz. The only one that's making me nervous is Ks. UGHHHHHH

Grades in law school seem all over the place. Some people do consistently kick ass, but most people I knew had grades all over the map. Most people I know had extremely different grades in the same semester, and some people moved hugely between semesters, and in both directions.

No wonder everyone said it's random.
