id say flip it over, let it drain, make sure its off, and wait till it would be completely dry before turning it on again.

Just don't turn it on. Was it on when the spill occurred?Whatisthis wrote:bk187 wrote:Slurp it off.

It very well could be ruined, but from what I've heard, you will guarantee its destruction if you try to turn it on before it dries.

Re: JUST SPILLED COFFEE ON MACBOOK...
Is the mac dead?
If it has life, I would email myself the important files (cheap fast way to "back up")
And grab an external HD and start saving as fast as possible.
If it is dead, then call Apple, or any place you are comfortable with and have the hardrive removed asap so that the damage can be minimized. If it sits in there drying it could make it worse.

I'd turn it off, take the hard drive out, and let it sit for several days. You've got a chance of it still working if you don't turn it on when the MoBo is wet, and it's allowed to dry.

My friend had his MacBook in his backpack with a bottle of water that spilled. He had Applecare and got it all fixed, but his work was all gone. Luckily he had backups.Whatisthis wrote:bk187 wrote:Slurp it off.

To my knowledge you can take a hard drive to certain stores and they'll get the information off of it, but it's costly and yours might be too fucked up to do it.

Shit. yea it was on. The screen started to go out and I turned it off. I don't care if my laptop is ruined. I just want to know if I can recover my work.
I already turned it off, so I can't email myself anything. Anyone have any experience getting data off a computer that shorted.

Re: JUST SPILLED COFFEE ON MACBOOK...
Go here:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jsp ... led+coffee
If you care to: You can connect it to another mac via usb/firewire. Then restart the wet one while holding down the T (puts it in "target mode") The screen (if working..) will turn grey, and on your other Mac a disk image will appear like any other external HD you have plugged in.
You can then drag/drop files.
Dont know if you can pull that off, but just know it is an option.

Contact a company that will try to recover data from the hard drive itself. Seriously you should be talking to actual tech people or at the very least using Google rather than TLS.

Re: JUST SPILLED COFFEE ON MACBOOK...
First of all you should be backing up everything to your flash drive at least weekly. In your situation I would email myself if it is in working condition, but otherwise leave it off, blow dry it for an hour, then let it sit for another hour and try turning it on. If that doesnt work take it to a specialist.
I am obviously not an expert and my advice should not be relied upon, just taken as one of the many possible options by no means being the best one.

If you turned it off immediately, you might be okay. This sounds crazy, but put it on top of your refrigerator or in the veggie crisper. Something about drawing out the moister, but I forgot the exact process. you'll find info about it all over google. I dropped my phone in the crapper (more than once), and this worked.

I've had luck getting CompUSA to remove the platters and extract information from a dead hard drive. It was expensive, and I had to buy an external drive for them to save the information.Whatisthis wrote:JazzOne wrote:Whatisthis wrote:bk187 wrote:Slurp it off.

Dropbox is probably good BUT...keg411 wrote:This is why Dropbox is your friend.
If you have a Mac, and care about backing up and having access at all times to your stuff...
GET "MOBILE ME" it is awesome and I do not know why Apple does not push it more.
Make/work/save all your files of importance on your "idisk" and they are instantly saved as you type and accessible from anywhere on any computer. Not to hijack the thread, but really, if you have a mac this is a great option. I have been using it for years and it has saved me many times in UG, and will for sure in LS.
Good luck man, sorry for you. Get right on it in case there is added problems from drying/corrosion.

Re: JUST SPILLED COFFEE ON MACBOOK...
Dude chillax. First, don't turn it on. Second, dry off the outside. Third, open it up and take out the hard drive. It is very unlikely that you got any coffee on the drive itself. Even if you did, the drive is sealed... it's very difficult to get anything in there. As for the machine, blow dry it very gently using the lowest setting and holding the dryer at a good distance from the machine.
After letting it dry for a day or two you should try putting the drive in and turning it on. Most likely the machine will boot right back up with no problems. If not, put the drive in another machine to get the data off.

You could also try to track down an enclosure for HDs that will allow you to hook it in and then connect it to a PC via USB. This will allow you to treat it as an external HD and grab all the files. I did this for my laptop when it died and put all the computer files somewhere safe then scrapped the laptop.

Thanks for this. I got a free copy of MobileMe that I haven't even opened because I wasn't sure what it was.2807 wrote:Dropbox is probably good BUT...keg411 wrote:This is why Dropbox is your friend.

Doesn't it require a $100/yr subscription fee? Though that easily seems worth it.JazzOne wrote:Thanks for this. I got a free copy of MobileMe that I haven't even opened because I wasn't sure what it was.

Re: JUST SPILLED COFFEE ON MACBOOK...
Yes it is 99 a year. Sorry. But you can get specials all the time on the price. go to Apple store for a demo and then they will sell it to you for 69.
If anyone wants help I will be happy to do it. PM me.
Just know that the "iDisk" is 20gig (you can buy more) and it is worth it.
Make folders/files in the idisk, and open them up and work all day like any other file you do. But, while you are doing it it is syncing! (You have to set it to sync automatically... easy). It works like a server. I go home, hop on my iMac, and there are all my notes from my macbook in class! Very nice.
And, I am a fanboy, but I do like knowing that Apple is behind it.
