No, I'm not nervous. In fact, no offense to my classmates, I'm not really super worried about fitting in. I'm more concerned with doing the best I possibly can. If that means time at home studying instead of being out with them, so be it.
I think having been out of school a while gives one a sharper focus.

I chose 25 because that is presumably the age you would be graduating LS if you went directly from UG. So, it makes you a fogey. Sorry!BlueCivic wrote:I'm 25 and object to my inclusion in this thread

Not your target demographic for your thread, but I highly intend to seek an older "mentor", someone with more life experience than me to help me out, especially if I come straight out of UG like i'm planning. So there is at least one person out there who will appreciate older students .

My understanding is that most law schools have a median age of about 24, but that there is a lot of diversity on the higher end of the median. So you'll be fine. I know that I would rather hang out with people with a couple years of life experience rather than 22 year olds who have only been in school. Obviously exceptions apply. Also I think that students a few years out self select to be more interesting on the aggregate.Burger in a can wrote:I don't anticipate doing keg stands and gravity bong hits with the kids either, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I would like to make some friends along the way.kalvano wrote:No, I'm not nervous. Oh, I wouldn't mind making some friends. In fact, I intend to. My dad often speaks about his law school buddies. I'm at a disadvantage living further away from the school, but I will probably have some people over at least a couple times, if they wish to make the trek.Burger in a can wrote:I don't anticipate doing keg stands and gravity bong hits with the kids either, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I would like to make some friends along the way.kalvano wrote:No, I'm not nervous. But I also fully realize the importance of the end result of what I am doing, something which I feel some people straight from undergrad won't. There's also discipline that comes from having worked 8, 10, 12, 14 hour days.

Not worried. I'm only concerned about my grades and getting to and from school. Nothing else matters! FTW! F*ck the World!

You shouldn't worry. I saw a senior citizen at my orientation. Plus, you're probably more mature than some of your peers!Burger in a can wrote:Haha I guess I'm the only one who is worried! Thanks guys.

Re: The 1L Old Fart thread (25+)
I'm 26, going to be 27 before next Fall, and I try to look on the bright side. Nobody takes a guy in his 20s seriously, and nobody will probably take me seriously until my late 30's/early 40's, so being almost 27 right now saves me some time in my career.
Also, I've learned a lot about what it takes to succeed and I definitely don't think I would have been prepared for law school at the age of 22 or 23.

well crap...what does that make me at 38?NonTradHealthLaw wrote:Holy crap...if 25 is fogey I may as well wear my pants past my navel next fall when I'm starting at 32.
I had a slight revelation/panic attack last week during orientation when someone made a comment about "how could anyone forget speeding tickets, you've only been driving like 6 years" to which I thought...um no...I've been driving as long as you've been alive. At which point I nearly fell over.
Also, when I met several professors and thought to myself "boy aren't they young, I thought profs were supposed to be old" and then it occurred to me that they look young because they are my age-peers. FML
I agree that with age comes life experience, but holy crap, getting old sucks especially when you don't realize it.

I had my first 18-yr old mentee this year...was scary to think this child could have been an unfortunate teenage accident. I just keep telling myself that I'm probably not as smart, funny, interesting, or as important as I think I am and to remember how much I hate unsolicited advice. That way, hopefully, I will be viewed as a colleague to 'these youngins' rather than 'that guy.'

I'm in my mid-40's, and it occurred to me that if I'd finished undergrad at 22 and had a child right away, that kid would be old enough to be in my 1L class this year. Yikes! But the administration has promised that I weill not be the oldest student - but they have acknowledged that I am older than some of the professors.

and I discovered that the professors who are younger than a student seem to get really excited about that idea and discuss it publicallybadpixie wrote:but they have acknowledged that I am older than some of the professors.
