Best applications for law students with MACS***

Post by bigmnstyle » Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:17 am

Was just curious if anyone had any recommendations on certain programs or softwares to get to help you stay organized in law school via mac or just make life easier in general during law school.

Look for something that helps you use the search function in the Forum for Law School Students.

circus ponies is good for note taking

I wouldn't buy the 2008 Office...everyone says it is a buggy RAM hog. Either get the 2004 Office or wait until Office 2010 for mac comes out later this year

LOL!

so I have VMware, should I run OneNote on there and any other programs people have used?

I have the microsoft office 2008 version already and have been using it since it came out. I have been alright with it but am planning on getting the 2010 version when it comes out. I also heard that onenote may come with it.

It will be Office 2011 when it comes out, but will not include OneNote. It's currently in it's 5th beta which seems nearly complete.

I love OneNote for PCs...but hoping that Circus Ponies Notebook does the same for Mac. I've heard good things, and also heard that Notebook is recommended for the legal field in general. Anyone that can corroborate?

How bout just plain Microsoft Word? Protip: if the software takes longer to learn than your classes, you're doing it wrong. Of course, I'm probably just slow and anti-technology. So there's that.

How is it better than just a Word doc that you can place a 2 columned table in? I'm thinking ala' Arrow's note taking system. (Brief/Pre-class notes on the left, class notes to the right.)

Also, you can use the Notebook View in Word to get a tablet with tabs on the right.

Just double check with your IT office first, and find out what your school's exam software is. The software may not run on a Mac that has any emulation software installed.

You can link from note to note. You can generate automatic indexes so if you print outline for test you can look straight up to it. Plus, it does screen clipping and such like onenote does. Will also audio record lectures if you wish. Plus a bunch of other features.

It's $30 for a student license. More than reasonable. Just buy it. You can use for 30 days for free if you want to test it.

to be fair, I have a mac, did the trial of CP, and still decided to go with OneNote (running it through Parallels)

What did you like better about onenote?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
