However the aforementioned farmer was used in the context of farming as the sole means of providing a livelihood for his/her family with other activities serving only as hobbies. One would not call a subsistence farmer a farmer of hobby. Therefore the farmer is a farmer by profession yet not receiving direct compensation for his farming.OG Loc wrote:No assumption really, just a practical definition of profession. If the farmer took a job as an accountant, but still grew his own food, would he still be a professional farmer? If he built his house, would he be a professional carpenter too? If he fools around with the neighboring farmer's daughter every Friday, does that make him a professional sex worker/prostitute?rman1201 wrote:
But I believe the flaw in your argument is an unwarrented assumption. You could be a farmer by profession and only produce enough food to feed your family.

Gaffer for adult film company. Or start a non-profit to help get underprivileged kids to good schools.

Have to leave the country b/c of no student visa, attempt to work for the FCO. Or, failing that, look for a rich and/or american husband.

What I have slowly deduced is that most people who would not be doing law are just looking for a sleepover buddy and $$? Correct me if I am wrong....

Probably a teacher, with an end goal of getting a job at a decent private HS.

Professional golfer. Given how bad everyone played in the Open yesterday, I may have had a shot.

Or work in a fish market. I did that in high school. Better than it sounds.

Hunting/gathering isn't a profession, as you don't get paid for it. Women became bored gathering, so while the men were out hunting they decided to earn some extra beads and legumes by hooking. Hence, it became a profession.rman1201 wrote:I always hated that saying. Logically Hunting/Gathering must be the worlds oldest profession. Even if you hypothetically imagine the first people, we had to eat before we could have sex, much less offer something in exchange for the sex. And what did we offer when we first started offering for sex? Most likely food we hunted....megaTTTron wrote:Prostitution?ashnicole wrote:the world's oldest profession
OP:
There's been a lot I've been contemplating -
Peace Corps, Teaching, PhD in Psych or PoliSci, Programming, Try to get in at a consulting firm, Get a second bachelors in a hard science now that I wouldn't have to worry about GPA.

Move to Boston to work as a janitor, spend my spare time solving math problems on a blackborad and become best friends with Ben Affleck.

I'd probably be on The Deadliest Catch. Good experience for what working at a biglaw firm is like.

No idea. I wouldn't change anything, though. I'm the "don't go to law school" guy. Admitted to a TTTT at full price.
Did well, transferred to a TT, did BIGLAW, did a two year stint at a small firm, hung a shingle. Wouldn't recommend it for everyone, though.
