It's just like "professor" - the S's double up, not the other consonants. If you had two C's, it'd be pronounced "nekessary."

No matter how many times I try to tell my undergrad students about these mistakes, some still make them on their papers. I have a handout and everything, and some students just can't stop with the errors. The 'then'/'than' mistake just makes me now.
