Difference in Bar Admissions

What's the difference between being admitted in a state and being admitted in a specific district in a state? For example on many firms websites I see people admitted in Southern District NY only and not Eastern, or Northern.

State bar=admitted to practice in state courts, district=admitted to federal practice?

Yes, Southern District NY is a federal district. Federal courts can (but don't have to) establish admission criteria different from those of the state bar. So a lawyer who has been admitted to the NY state bar is admitted to all state courts in the state, but is not automatically admitted to all of the federal district courts in NY state.

What are the criteria for the NY Federal courts? Is the process the same for admittance?
